Faster Than Light & The sky is falling

:frown:.. whats worse than space junk falling on my head is that REM have broken up..best band Ive seen live

From Wikipedia:

In 1985 was proposed by Chodos et al. that neutrinos can have a tachyonic nature.[SUP][7][/SUP][SUP][8][/SUP] Today, the possibility of having standard particles moving at superluminal speeds is a natural consequence of unconventional dispersion relations that appear in the Standard-Model Extension,[SUP][9][/SUP][SUP][10][/SUP][SUP][11][/SUP] a realistic description of the possible violation of Lorentz invariance in field theory. In this framework, neutrinos experience Lorentz-violating oscillations and can travel faster than light at high energies.

So this seems to confirm a theory that was already over 25 years old concerning neutrinos. Einstein stated that an object with mass would have to acquire infinite enery and infinite mass to accelerate to the speed of light. Tachyons are assumed to be already over the speed of light, so they do not need this acceleration, therefore do not need to get infinitely big or energized. Neutrinos seem to exist in both the subluminal universe ( the observable world of less than the speed of light we live in ) and the universe of superluminal speeds. That's what CERN is trying to find out concerning neutrinos.

Moving faster than light would mean you'd get somewhere before current events would happen... backward time travel. There is no forward time travel... you'd have to have less than zero acceleration... unless black holes have this capability.

I'm gonna wait a bit before I jump on the tachyonic neutrino bandwagon; six clicks seems to be an awfully small value and could be well within instrumental statistical error margin. If it's real, it's significant - damned significant - but I wouldn't be holding my breath for the Nobel just yet.

NEWS??? Nothing new about this. CERN knew this in 2001. In the early 90's we measured neutrinos arriving here on Earth before we saw the solar flare that emitted them.

As far as traveling back in time if you exceed the speed of light, that would mean the neutrinos arrived somewhere before they were created. That didn't happen.

Heck, back in the late '70's the theroretical work indicated Neutrinos (mmm. Neu improved Trino's! The high speed breakfast cereal. In and out before you even open the box! sounds good) were FTL. It raised some interesting ideas. A military sci-fi concept debated often on some boards waay back in the usenet days was the Relevistic bomber- a body accelerated to a large fraction of C ("Honest; Officer! I was only doing 279792458 meters pes second!"..." Boy, thats just what we call a relavistic effect. I clocked you at 98% C, and around here, we figger C ain't just a good idea; it the LAW!") launched against a planet as a kinetic kill weapon. Would the target blow up before you launched the weapon. sort of a Schrodingers cat thing. We just had to build the detector arrays (down deep salt mines, huge arrays of uber sensitive photo cells looking for a flash of cherenkov radiation from a partical being annihilated by a passing neutrino, in huge tanks of water) and wait. And wait. Really wild stuff has being happening in the physics world- revolutionary stuff- like the math describing a way to hack the speed of light with out violating any einsteinian physics. A warp drive, the principles just like the Star Trek warp drive- in fact, young Miguel's epiphany came while watching STTNG. Life imitates art, and the sci-fi geeks are ahead of the curve again

It would be possible that something could blow up before we pulled the trigger in a quantum sense... alternate universe. Thinking this way, there are an infinite number of pasts, but only one possible future.
