well, since I saw "Memphis Belle" movie at early 90s, I have to say it is the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress long range heavy bomber.
as says one web site: Undoubtedly, the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress significantly influenced the turn of events during the Second World War. This long range heavy bomber led the US Air Force assault in occupied Europe, carrying out strategic bombing which brought the industries of Nazi Germany to a standstill. Although formidably armed, crews of the B-17 faced unspeakable horror in the onslaught by veteran Luftwaffe fighters and ground flak fire. More than 47,000 airmen lost their lives during daylight raids in Germany, but the mighty Flying Fortresses pressed on.
I also remember very well my first "sounded" PC flight with this bomber when playing Secret Weapons Of The Luftwaffe - with my ever first SoundBlaster like audiocard
B-17 Pink Lady.
She is the only airworthy B-17 in the world that has accomplished war missions and she also flew as Mother & Country in the movie Memphis Belle.
Spitfire, all marks. Not so fond of the 2-seat conversions, but given the opporchancity I'd happily sit in it wherever it flew! Would love to see a Mossie fly and the Tempest V being restored to flying condition for Kermit Weeks.
