Few files to help improving the sim [removed]

Sorry... removed :monkies:

Good work before, but me thinks it would be better to do this in coordination with the dev team so they could incorporate it into a patch, keep control of the software, help eliminate more variables from support issues and keep a single source for everything..

Yes, I have to second that. We appreciate the devotion to making things correct, believe me we do, but please do not offer files for download that have been altered from original Phase 3 files without our specific written consent.

I would think offering these might breech our copywrite laws. Please remove them from download, and talk to Winder first before posting them again.

We can always offer advice and suggestions, we are always open to that as you know. But to post files that we've created, and you have altered might ruffle some feathers.

Thanks,

OvS
OFF Dev Team.

Well, I see. If the dev team wants the thread to be removed, then no prob. :)

Actually, I've not performed some hard changes, I mean, nothing that can generate strong issues. Basically, I've only replaced names with names.

EDIT: actually OvS, I believe these files to have been created by Microsoft, right?

I agree with that (not to post modified files I mean). :)

Before, I think you'll find that the files in question are additions, not modifications of existing Microsoft files. :)

Dunno if it validates what I did lol (it more looks like the contrary...)

Well, I just tried to help. I spent hours to do that.

I understand not everybody is French, not everybody knows French early aviation ranks, etc. I didn't do it to breech OFF copywrite laws... and I posted it here and not somewhere in the backyard. So you don't have to feel under attack. lol

Actually, if the Dev Team wants, I can share my stuff directly with them. Just pm me or reply here. Otherwise, well nevermind.

:ernae:

EDIT: You're right; these are files created for OFF.

None of it's meant as a knock against you or your work mate, and I'm sure anyone here would agree that your effort is very much appreciated. It's just that ad-hoc modifications of files can lead to all sorts of problems, included in which is the potential to have modded files damage a game installation and result in mis-placed anger directed at the devs.

And by going through the devs you get your work checked and validated and then included in all future official updates.:woot:

Xaiver,

Don't feel like your efforts are fruitless, they are worth the time. If Shred pops in, talk to him about what you have done and possibly we can work it all in. We're all not experts on the team, and sometimes finding information about ranks, and name regarding certain countries can be very difficult if you're not from that area.

So in short, we appreciate the help. Our dedication to the historical value in this game is relentless. So again, if Shred shows up, talk to him. He can then talk to Winder and see if we can beef-up what we have with the info that you have researched.

Effort is never wasted, it's just re-directed. :)

@Siggi: Thanks mate. :)

@OvS: Ok I see. Thx for clearing that up. Well, I'm gonna try to contact Shredward. :)

Ooer!.... I hope no-one minds me skinning? (I wont post any for download though...promise!)

These are my personal opinions and I am not speaking for the dev team (nor can I speak for them anyway).

Again, I am not speaking for the dev team but I would imagine that skins should be fine.

I run a site for modders (36,000 members and close to 3 million mod files downloaded) and you would be surprised how much it promotes a game to allow modding.

So as far as legalities (in most other games anyway) , you can mod as long as you are not making money from it or you are not passing along original un modded files etc.

However I understand P3 was just released and the Devs want to make sure no one breaks it etc. but as time goes on, certian mods really add to the game as well as add the sales of the game.....this is just my personal opinon ....

please do not offer files for download that have been altered from original Phase 3 files without our specific written consent.
I would think offering these might breech our copywrite laws.

Just my opinion of course, but this sounds pretty bogus to me. If I bought OFF and want to change a few things, that's not allowed??

If the OFF team is free to mod CSF3, then aren't others free to mod OFF in a similar way...make and share skins, provide improved medal bitmaps, etc etc?

Wouldn't any argument you make against a mod to OFF be an argument Microsoft can use against you? In both cases I think there is no argument to be made.

I believe that there has been some overly hasty posting here - we are certainly not here to stop any mods - OFF itself is a mod.

However what I would like to ask is:

1) That mods are PLEASE held back until 1.3 is out as at the moment we want to deal with our own issues.

2) That folks at least run an e-mail by us and that OBD is given credit. This to ensure that we see no stability implications with the mod - forewarned is forearmed.

No one said no one was allowed. Anyone can mod away, but wouldn't it be better if it's valid and of interest to all (I'm interested in these rank corrections) that it's done in concert with OBD so it's included in future patches and upgrades?

I took the comment saying "please do not offer files for download that have been altered from original Phase 3 files without our specific written consent. I would think offering these might breech our copywrite laws" to mean it isn't allowed. I think it was a valid interpretation...the poster 'pulled' his files so obviously that was the message he got.

Anyway, it is all a non-issue. Good clarification by Winder...thanks for that.

And yes, any mod will be better if it is coordinated with the OFF team. Obviously that would be the preferred route. But sometimes folks are going to mod on their own and share there work. Nice to know they are not under anyones restrictions to do so.
