First impressions - Tweaking OFF BHAH to get the best out of it.
First of all again a big Thank you to the OBD team for giving us the product of a true labour of love. The first impressions of just quick combat action are in the level of "Wow!!!". I'll proceed to campaign soon.
I am currently trying to tweak OFF to get the best combination of looks vs parformance. My system specs are the following:
Q6600 quad core 2.4
4 GB RAM
Nvidia 9600GT 512
2x650GB Sata drives
Vista 32 SP1
I used to run P2 at 5-5-4-4-5-3, the fours being terrain and scenery, 3 for clouds. Following Pols suggestions I had set 16x AF and 8x AA at the nvidia control panel, overriding application settings and setting AA to "none" in the CFS3 config. I kept the same settings in P3 as well.
The graphics are astonishing and I am getting very good frame rates in the region of 40s in general, however there are times when long stutters happen, usually at the moment of merging between two opposing flights. In FS games one could control the stutters somewhat by limiting the FPS. Can this be done in OFF, or if not, do you have any suggestions?
Also, with the above settings FRAPS in P2 was recording nicely, now when recording the FPS drop below 10. Not really important as I do not make movies but it would be nice to show OFF BHAH to the folks at work.
The other issue I have is more strange but I admit I have not researched it deeply enough. Sometimes the nose of the plane is yawing abruptly left or right for no apparent reason, as if I have applied rudder, which I've not. It looks like a stutter but it's smoother and It happens at the worst of times, usually when a plane is in my sights. I am using Saitek pedals, so I wonder if it is related to the deadzone in my .xca file. I saw now something about this in the FAQ and I'll check my xca file entries when I get home.
The new AI are really smart. Their defensive and offensive moves are a joy to watch, unless you are in the receiving end of course. I even saw a damaged Albatross land, which I duly strafed. I love the way the cities and villages are now setup, with the buildings nicely aligned to the roads. The new trees are also very realistic.
Great stuff!
