First steps at repainting... and the first problems

Dimus

SOH-CM-2025
My Tatoi airport project is proceeding well. To wrap it up I decided to also make a repaint of my favorite 152, the SX-AKL in which I soloed (see avatar). I have the Carenado version so it was an obvious choice.

I downloaded the blank texture, converted it to 24bmp with Dxtbmp and started painting away in photoshop. After hours of work I loaded the paint and found out the hard way that I also had to reimport the alpha channel from the blank textures. I also realised that Carenado did not offer both sides of the plane but only limited space for the registration on the back fuselage. As you see in the pictures the registration of SX-KL is larger than the space reserved by Carenado. It seems that I have to unrealistically reduce its size to make it fit. Also I can not paint the aeroclub logo on the nose as it will be wrongly mirrored. The same fir the "F152II" and "REIMS/CESSNA" lettering. I prefer not to put them than have them mirrored.

My last problem is that the whole plane is shiny, including the tyres (if this can be seen in the pics). I have copied all the textures (specular, bump etc.) from the other versions supplied by Carenado into my new folder. What else is there to do?

Is there a simple how to guide out there for repainting, especially for carenado stuff? Your help would be again appreciated.

The real thing:

The stbd side, chack the mess in the registration:

The alpha channel in the images must be controlling the shine. When you convert the original textures to use in Photoshop, you're better off choosing 32-bit and saving them as TGA (Targa) files, or some other format that retains the alpha channel. I'm not sure which format DXTBMP offers, but in Imagetool, I choose TGA. To save your existing work, you can convert the original BMPs to TGA and copy out their alpha channel, overwriting your existing photoshop alpha with it, then save and convert.

I've only started painting Carenado planes recently, and I see why some painters won't touch them. Until very recently, they mirrored a lot of parts, making them impossible to paint text on. It varies with each plane, though, so there's no hard and fast guide.

I believe the problems lies with "ALABEO152C_T" the texture that allows you to apply the registration to the 'Starboard Side' of the plane.
You have a very small area to work with, and you must remember that both side of the fuse use "ALABEO152A_T"...Know as "Mirroring".
You need to adjust the registration on 'ALABEO152C_T' to fit....

Your best bet is to make "SX-AKL" fit with in the confines like the number in the picture above "N2809K" on 'ALABEO152C_T. If your using PhotoShop you can add this as a layer for reference then hide it in your final texture.

Wow, that was fast! Thanks!

Spotlope, I'll try that. Dxtbmp offers the tga option.

Cody, I did use that file but I figured that I could use all the area offered by that fuselage piece there. Apparently I have to reduce it to the size of the existing registration number. This is so dissapointing, the plane will look just plain wrong.

Yes it is....And Bill is right...They can be a pain to paint!
Also note...They don't map the wings for 'Registration'?
You may want to go to AVSIM, Carenado has a forum of their own set up there now and they do respond! I just don't think they would re-map any of the recent releases' like the 172 and 152. I wish they would...but...

Thanks! I'll give their forum a try.
