First time in Cfs3

Well maybe not but I certainly haven't seen it in any previous thread :icon_lol:.

I was flying near Bastogne in the 1945 campaign in ETO Expanion, on a strike_infantry mission. Up ahead I saw a lot of artillery flashes so I went to investigate. There was a German train, getting pounded by an artillery battery!!

Never seen that before. Then I remembered that I had tweaked the weapons file that belongs to the artillery facility. The change was to widen the targets that the weapon acquires. From memory, I included "vehicles, equipment, facility". Might have thrown "ship" in too. Now the artillery facilities, which get spawned as part of the frontline spawns, blaze away at any number of targets.

The fabulous ETO craters are also shown to good effect.

Fantastic stuff, Groundhogs, thank you :applause::ernae:

Guns folder

So much for memory. The changes to target acquisition are made in the relevant file in the Guns folder. The .xdp file for the relevant gun addresses features like range of the shell, and what targets the gun will acquire.

wouldn't want to put anyone wrong :icon_lol:

Artillery Battles Like the Somme

Its now possible to get an effect which matches the textures Winder uses for his OFF WWI battlefields. What I like about the artillery crater effect is that it is random and so adds a more life-like feel.

Here are a couple of screenies from my ETO expansion, this time BoB era. HEAPS of craters on the frontline. Also flak using parachute flares - :isadizzy: don't know how that happened.

@ Pachi - as always back up your original files. :wavey: I find it helps to take notes of what you did, to keep track of things. To find out which rounds to edit in the Weapons folder, I first looked at the Spawns files calling for artillery under the Frontline.spawns file in the Spawns folder.

That lead me to a facility file. I found there are a number of facilities which call for an artillery "pick type" - #armor_artillery_static. There are a number of vehicles that meet this pick type. Each vehicle xdp calls for a gun. Each artillery gun calls for a round.

Each round is in the Weapons file. If you create a "tree" of relationships between these files, you will find that one artillery round is common to a number of the artillery "vehicles" that spawn on the frontline.

Hence just changing one round should give you noticeable results. I've edited a number of artillery rounds to give craters that Groundhogs created for their artillery round. In the attached screenshot, you can see it is pretty mindblowing.

And hard on framerates!! :isadizzy:

1945 Campaign

My squadron successfully carried out a destroy_armored_column campaign mission. On the way back over the front line I decided to target a "dug in tanks" frontline spawned facility which was being targeted by artillery.

These screenshots are as the artie found its range - hellish conditions for static formations. Then I crashed :isadizzy:

Lovely scenery, but! :icon_lol:
