Flak Bait: Really not the bomber, you actually attracting Flak...

Hello again,

I fly every type of bomber i can get my hands on for the sim.

Its great until I have to attack a heavily fortified V1 site or Battlefield target.

Can anybody give me any combat advice whatosever in manuvering around Flak? Is it possible to just go around it or do you really have no chance at all?

Flak seems to follow my bombers everywhere, even when I'm out of range...

Any Flak repellant available?

You could try turning it down to medium or low.

I try not to fly straight and level in flak but i don,t really know if it makes any difference at all!!:engel016:

The flak in CFS3 was way overdone and deadly beyond any possible degree of historical acuracy. We completely reworked the flak in ETO as follows:

1. In CFS3 the flak will follow you all the way to the ground and shoot at you at altitudes below 10 ft! In ETO flak guns will not shoot at you below 175 ft AGL unless you are directly above them. You can now perform historically accurate low level attacks below flak but you will still be exposed to small calibre MG and smalls arms fire.
2. The ETO flak has been reworked so that the flak bursts produce smaller splinters. You can now take flak hits, sustain minor damage and keep flying. It is now possible to take flak damage and fly home as it should be.
3. The ETO smoke bursts are new as is the flash and light. At night the ETO flak produces reflected light which will illuminate your cockpit. This feature was not in the CFS3 flak.
4. The ETO flak guns now have a visible muzzle flash and smoke burst when they fire. You can see them flash on the ground when they shoot at you. The CFS 3 guns did not have a muzzle flash.

Install ETO and go hit some major facilities, I think you will find it more survivable instead of the suicide misssions they were before.

Regards,

Steve

Use to have problems finishing my anti-ship missions in a fighter because of the major flak problem untill
I discovered a manueuver that seemed to help (90% of the time). This wont help a bomber of course,
but in a fighter, 1. approach the group from the rear at around a 3000ft start and where you can see
back of ship formation in top-middle of your window,(cockpit). 2.Start with outside perimeter, never cut
through the middle. 3.Get in a good strafe on your first target, cut out to the side just a bit, and stay
low. (Never ascend when still close to the formation). 4. Fly out half mile or so,then loop up and back in, (this is where I usually try to nail the foremost destroyer if my wingmen havent done so yet.)

Try to keep enough ground clearance so after you have passed the target, you can still descend slightly enough to miss any fire from flak or mg burst. Just make sure you can avoid flying to close to
the other ships ahead of the previous target.

Descend-Target-Slight turn & Low-Clear-Ascend & Repeat

....what Wyld45 said, AND
If you are flying as flight leader, assign your flight to attack the targets. Do Not go in ahead of your flight. Go in from another angle at the same time. this will spread the attention and make it much more survivable in stock CFS3.

excellent point dalliwalli

LOL well I got shot down too often otherwise. I find ETO more survivable but I wanted the gunners to be a bt more acurate in campaign mode. You can set accuracy in QC mode but I don't know if it translates to campaign mode.

So I've tried two tweaks - edited the mission_xml with a reading for skill or summat. And added a realism setting for UISEL. When I'm back home from Brisvegas I will post whatever works. At the moment I don't recall enough detail.:icon29: too many of these?

Nice to hear from all of you guys!

I 'm going to try the new Flak replacements from the CFS3 effects section.

Nice to know I'm not the only pilot attracting Flak Cologne...:)

Not to be a bother, but I tried Gecko's Flak fix for the stock CFS3 and It seems to be even worse than before.

I can't even reach the target at 500 feet away without being blown to bits. I've tried high altitude bombing runs on land based targets with no luck at all. Those gunners are good. Expolsive shells still hit me at 13,000 feet and as low as 10 feet above ground and water.

Anyone can get ahold of Gecko or anybody else that can give some accurate flak effects for the game? I can't install ETO because I have little space on the Hard drive for it. So I'm working with what I have until I can get more memory.

If you are flying quick combat or single missions, you can click on the "skill" parameter and knock down the ground unit level in QC to rookie and in SM the anti-aircraft level to rookie.
Works for me!!

I usually avoid flack by charging in like a loony and dive bombing the damn thing. Up until I installed ETO I had both on ace, but the AI for planes is really dumb-crashing into the ground etc. One thing I like to do if I have "Aircraft stress causes damage" turned off is go down very steeply, put your flaps out so you slow down and lay your egg. If you do this with ASCD on you blow your flaps, but it's still possible. I think it's possible in anything up to and including a Mosquito. And if you get shot down hope you land on whatever you are charging down on! :jump:

+1 on ETO flak. Huge improvement. MS flak designers failed Trig and Geometry. If you look at the stock xdps, you will know what I mean. O-1 is right when he talks about below 10 ft agl. You can't SEE that low on any typical european terrain. It's another reason why you get pounded on your home airfield in QC.
