Flight Simulation Meets the Metaverse

Well, it has finally happened. Or at least something has happened. Warning: You may never be the same after watching this.

For those unaware, VRChat currently is the only really popular metaverse. Much more popular than that stupid thing Facebook is trying to foist on us.

I am not in VRChat, because I have lots of RL friends and am not inclined to cosplay as an anime catgirl, but I do follow the metaverse because it's interesting tech and might be our future.

So a couple of days ago I learned from this vid that there are flight simulators in the VRChat metaverse. Basically it's War Thunder, but with graphics from FS98, and you apparently have to cosplay as an anime catgirl. And it looks like you have to break out those hand controllers that came with your headset and learn to fly with them.

Just when I thought the metaverse couldn't get more dystopian. I mean, it's nice that this nice YouTuber enjoys the flight sim experience. And there are some brief teaser moments in this vid that suggest that besides the arcade jet combat, some more sophisticated simming also is available. But, wow. This strikes me as being just like everything else in the metaverse, whether it's social interaction, business meetings, concerts, or any other activity. You take something you can already do outside of the metaverse and dilute it to the point of cringe, just so it can be in the metaverse.

"graphics from FS98" You may want to Youtube a few FS98 videos. The video is in the FS04, FSX ballpark of graphics in some places while others are sort of CFS2-ish.
