Flightzone?

Does anyone know if the flightzone sceneries will work in FSX? I treid to go to their site but it is gone.

I can tell you it does, but not without some major work. Many of the offending files must be removed.

The site, and it's creator are a sad testament to an amazing talent, who turned his back on his craft, his supporters and his creations and walked away.

Falcon...do you know the list of files? I'd really like to have at least troutdale and hillsboro back online in FSX.

Also, using REX2, can you tell me how the FPS is using it instead of the stock clouds?

The Flightzone Portland scenery is one of the things I miss most from FS9. Hillsboro in particular was one one of my favourite places to fly from.

Hillsboro is wonderful. I'm very fond of Pearson since one of my unit's detachments is located at Vancouver Barracks and we can see the old log fort from the backside of the building.

Pearson is on my scenery drawing board for FTX, along with Troutdale and of course PDX. Not sure when it'll be done, though.

I felt that way for awhile after FSX was released, but the more I thought about how the developers, who promised me, on their forum, an update to FSX just left me hanging the quicker I got over it and the less I wanted to use any product from them. If Stephan or Patrice ever come back to FS design, it will take quite a bit for me to ever give them any support.

I look at high quality offerings like the ones from Orbx and realize that they are light years ahead of the quality that was even available with Flightzone. It's to bad, they were very talented, would have loved to have seen what they could have done with FSX.

I love OrbX but I would give my (virtual) arm for the framerate Vauchez achieved. I don't believe in the concept of OrbX that they design for future hardware. I live now and want to fly now and not wait, I might be death or have lost my arm ....:mixedsmi:

Don't count KPDX (or Pearson, or Troutdale) out as far as frame rates go just yet. I'm a big believer in scenery that performs as well as possible, and I'm going to do my best to make sure these fly as smoothly as they look.

I see your point and also agree a bit, but much of that is in the difference between FSX and FS9, and not so much because of the scenery. Default FS9 maxed in that area isn't the same as default FSX maxed, there just isn't the amount of performance headroom like we were used to later in the life of FS9.

I've really been enjoying Hillsboro in PNW, Orbx did a good job at sprucing it up and then I slapped a high res photoreal over it, can't wait to see Bill's work in that area.

I thought I saw a freeware, FS9 release from Vauchez this weekend at Avsim? Same person as the Flightzone sceneries? I was hoping he didn't put a valid email in the zip file, as per Avsim requirements, otherwise his inbox might be filled with... well, you know.

That's the one. Uploaded at Avsim April 28, 2010, LFRD2004 by Etienne Vauchez. His email address is in the "read me"

LFRD is a regional airport in Brittany, France. This scenery was created entirely with GMax and the latest Microsoft compilers. Everything was made to ensure maximum framerate while giving maximum visual impact, even on humbler machines. This scenery will run just as fast as the default one (which is very bare) with your current settings, even though there are literally thousands of houses, buildings, trees and a detailed airport.

This is a complete package:
-SRTM local mesh with custom coast trimming
-Custom phototexture (200sq km), with seamless blending into FS9 standard landclass
-Full autogen with custom local texture
-Custom landclass and waterclass
-AFCAD2 file with parking codes
-Custom Hi-res photographic textures at airport.
-Gmax buildings and xml librairy objects.

It was made by a real life pilot and is totally aimed at recreating the feeling of being there, not so much on the ground (after all, this is a FLIGHT simulator), but at circuit altitudes. This is not about recreating an airport in all its glorious details at the cost of framerate, but instead an exercise in balancing visual cues and details as viewed from up there to make it 'as real as it gets' within the limits of FS9. Yeah, I don't know if they're the same as the file was originally released years ago, before either of the Flightzone sceneries were released. I just figured that someone was uploading it to Avsim after the destruction of their file servers.
