I'm not trying to open old wounds, as I was one of the suckers who waited with baited breath for it's release, even pre-orderred the collectors edition. As far as realism, it was a disappointment, but for pure entertainment, it was a good movie

One reason it was a memorable film, is there was NO sex, and NO foul language, and they weren't missed !!

Definately should be part of your video library. And at those prices, you can't go wrong :kilroy:

Yup, this is a pretty good flick Gimp. I bought it a couple months ago. Good action. Really the only turn off was the historical innacuracies. And of course they have to put in a couple cheesy love scenes to throw the girlfriends and wives a bone.

The flaws, inaccuracies and cliches in this film were discussed at length on this forum. We are WW1 nuts. It is our passion. That's what we do ;)

But nonetheless I found it entertaining and would glady add it to my WW1 collection of moving pictures. You take what you can get. I only wish there were more WW1 aviation movies around for us to criticise :kilroy:

Well before "The Crash", i remember WF2 i think, had a thread on a new one. The Red Baron? But it was only in German. I'd like to know how that one was if anyone saw it. Or if it was even produced yet?

Red Baron movie is even worse than Flyboys. It has, perhaps, 5-8 minutes worth of dogfights, in total... and the Alb`s maneuvers like DR.1`s and DR.1`s mostly has the speed of an Alb at the end of a steep dive..

and it has....SEX...and FOUL LANGUAGE!

I can distinctly remember the Rittmeister chatting up Joseph Fiennes (who had a glazed look in his eye), and speaking in GERMAN in the promos.

Here is a picture of the Rittmeister, the ruthless Hun, killer of 100 odd allies. No wonder Jo had that glazed look.

and here is a picture of the REAL Rittmeister - would you like to meet HIM on a darl night?

Hello,
poor me has neither seen "Flyboys" nor the new "Red Baron" movie, i am still clutching at "Aces high" lol.
Flyboys never appeared in the german cinema as far as i know, and i surely will get the DVD sooner or later.

As for the triplane outrunning the Albatros in the Red Baron movie i know the DRI had a relatively weak Oberursel engine, but following the records it was almost as fast as a Camel (and remember MvR's last fight chasing Lt. May). Other witnesses (e.g. Udet) said that despite its well-known faults the DRI was capable of reaching 100 miles horizontally up to 2500 feet/appx. 800 meters altitude, if trimmed properly. That is, not trimmed against the torque - because experienced pilots knew how to handle the DRI, and did not want it to be trimmed neutral by their mechanics. Without axis and lateral trim the DRI could be flown a lot faster, and the sudden change of torque during a blip could be used for the most crazy manoeuvers, adding to its properties of turning around during flight, flying sideways and almost backwards, if only for a short time. It was indeed a most unstable plane and anything else than a stable gun platform for the inexperienced pilot.
The predecessor of the DRI (Fokker F1) had a larger engine, and e.g. Voss was always faster in it than his wingmen in their Albatrosses - which proved fatal in the end.

Greetings,
Catfish

Thanks guys. Guess I'll only watch "The Red Baron" if I happen to come across it on TV. Didnt expect it to be that great anyway due to the highly original title. I'll see if I can get a copy of "The Blue Max" on DVD instead - used to have it on VHS but i lost it. Dont have a VCR anymore anyway.
Cheers,

Well said, Catch22! :applause:

We definitely have to take the good with the bad when it comes to watching movies dealing with the "Great Air War". I just watched the old 1930s classic "Dawn Patrol" again with its' hokey-by-modern-standards action stunts and dialog. Yet it has some great scenes for any WW1 air buff. I'm waiting for a copy of "Aces High" to arrive on dvd as like Rooster, I don't have a VCR any more...it broke down and was trashed a long time ago.

The History Channel episodes that deal with their flight sim recreations of WW1 air battles, while not movies, are some of the most recent and interesting, I think, tv portrayals of the air war. :ernae:
