Flying Boats at War

gavinc

SOH-CM-2022
Slow (very slow) but steady (very unsteady) progress.

Thanks to TRs generous donation of his source code for the Clio and him whipping up a rear turret for me, I have started to make very basic progress on getting the Empire Class boats ready for sub hunting duties.

This version is supposed to have the turret fairing around the rudder but I doubt that my rudimentary FSCS skills will be up to it. I am also having major issues getting the texture mapping on the wings sorted out. The ailerons and the flaps refuse to map properly. Plus I am doing it in fits and spurts as I steal 15 minutes here and there.

In other words don't hold your breath waiting for it to materialize.

Ahhhhhh, Yes!

A budding designer! A future Michael Angelo of CFS2, a Master of FSDS2.24! :welcome: :jump: :applause: :medals: :ernae: :friday::engel016::engel016:

Gavin,

try joining the wing, flaps and aileron together, then map the texture to the entire wing area.
Then break the flaps and aileron off the wing but leave their texture alone afterwards.

The long way round is to go into the texture mapping feature and look at the magnification in the right hand column. If you magnify so that the individual points are easily visible you can click and drag the points individually to their proper positions.

Great looking stuff Gavin! :woot:

Just a quick suggestion though, the turrets, in this shot anyway, look as if they're standing too proud of the fuselage. The BP was the lowest profile British turret fitted to RAF aircraft.

Baby Steps

Thanks for the suggestion Collin but I came back to it this afternoon and all of a sudden the mapping worked just like the tutorials said it should. I selected the wing, flap and aileron and then mapped the texture to all 3 parts at the same time. Et voila the texture maps correctly.
I am absolutely positive that this is exactly what I have been doing for the last 2 days so why it suddenly started to work is beyond me. I know computers work because they are full of magic smoke but FSDS seems to be smoking something a little bit special.

Hewman, I lowered the turrets into the fuselage more. You were right. When I went back and looked at the photos it was obvious that the turrets were very low profile.

By the way - this paint scheme is (at the moment at least) totally bogus. If there is anyone who knows which end of a paintbrush is which I would be more than grateful for assistance.

Gavin, you're...

... definitely 'the little engine that could'. Your first effort already looks better than the last one I did before giving it up. :applause:

Not only are you going to become an accomplished designer, but a premier skinner as well. :jump:

The Flying Boats are some of my favorite planes of all ...this is great to see underway. thanks so much for effort. I am hopeful of U boat and convoy campaigns ...
