FM-2 Wildcat VC-93 released by Bub!

Hi All,

Here's the last one. "White 29" flown by Lt. Hatherley Foster lll of VC-93 off the USS Petrof Bay, CVE-80. I'll include all the files necessary and a couple of blank textures for those who want to make their own. I've made some subtle changes and after a good "once over", I'll get them uploaded in a couple of days. These are for Allen's FM-2 Wildcat.

Thanks and have fun,

Bob

Lovely skin Bub!

I like a lot your 9-cylinder engine texture, reflecting the correct Wright R-1820-56 unit that powered the FM-2. In this engine no second row of cylinders should be seen behind the front row.

I tried my best to circumvent the mapping quirks of this detail to avoid that part of the valve pushrod ducts are displayed on the gear reduction case behind the propeller.

I succeeded only partially, it's almost impossible to do it, because part of the cylinder texture is mapped to the case.

I replaced it, together with all the internal parts painted anti-corrosion zinc chromate I copied from your textures, in the two original skins painted by Allen and the result can be seen in the thumbnail shot I included in my pack. Although short-lived, I love the US Navy three-tone livery more that the integral Night Blue skin. The 3-tone dress looks even better to me with the late 1943 Star-n-bar roundel outlined in red.

If you like my touchup I can send it to you.

Are you planning to do some Grey-White skins for the Atlantic Ocean anti-Uboot squadrons, too, as you did in your work on Gramps' FM-2?

Cheers!
KH

Kelti,
I cannot take credit for the engine texture. That comes from our favorite Uncle (tgt). I just "appropriated" it. I figured this would be the last Wildcat I did. For you, I'll do one more, at least. You pick out the Atlantic FM-2 you want and I'll do it. With your props and extras, Unc's engine, your touch-up, it should look just fine.
By all means, send it along. Do you still have my email address? If not, I'll PM it to you.
Thanks for your props and exhaust extras. They make a big difference in how the aircraft looks.
Cheers,
Bob

Rog, Bob!

Do send me a pm, or an e-mail at my usual old address, with your e-mail address. I should have it, but just in case I misplaced it or my brain misfires.

I'll pack up what I did and send it over to you.

As to the Atlantic FM-2, I have no documentation about squadrons and their ops in the Battle of the Atlantic. The first Wildcat dressed in that handsome Grey-White livery I ever saw, was one of your repaints.

It's up to you, whichever skin comes easier for you to paint will be perfect for me.

B.T.W.: do you happen to know if FM-2 Wildcats could carry aerial depth bombs? If they were capable of, and did carry out anti-sub operations with depth charges, I can send you a modified FM-2 dp with a specific anti-sub payload. I'd guess 2 x 250lb aerial depth bombs + 6 HVARs.

The only account I was able to read about CVE anti-sub activities in the Atlantic, described specific two-plane patrols made of a Wildcat and a TBF(M). The Wildcat would spot the U-boot and strafe it to keep it from submerging again, while calling upon the Avenger flying nearby, which would came in and attack the sub with depth charges and rockets. On second thought, this would make the extra FM-2 payload a little fictional. Logically, the fighter would not impair its manoeuvrability with extra weight.

You tell me and I'll comply. :mixed-smiley-010:

Thank you.

Cheers!
