Oh boy... the Flak bursts look pretty heavy over there....

Hopefully this can be cleared up.

That;'s too bad, that some little pictures should stir up so much. Hope everyone settles down. The OFF forum in particular is the best one I have found.

Bummer

But.... but.... I just got here! (insert frowny face) Sad, sad indeed we live in troubled times. There is enough trouble for us in the world why did a few have to let a little B.S. be the ruin of something so good? Who can step in and fill Ickies shoes? Certainly not me. I'm an idiot. I don't like Tom Cruise, I don't got to his movies, and I let it go. I just hope he dosn't get the roll of Werner Voss in a future movie. Know what I mean? My best wishes to Ickie, take care of yourself.

The good of the many outway the good of the few...

Why is it that the concept of free speech is taken to mean that a person has the right to be disrespectful and mean to others? It seems to me that the person doing the work and paying the bills should have the loudest voice...not the most mean spirited.

In situations such as this, so many good people enjoy this site...and the team is on the verge of an entire new level of contribution to the flight sim community.

Can we...as a group...find a way to make the good of the site come before the inconsiderate comments of those who need to be "taken out back behind the shed"?

I hope we don't lose a very talented and dedicated person who has done a ton of work for all of us because of someone who will simply move on to another site and cause problems there...

Let's work to come together...what does the silent MAJORITY think?

Carry on, Ron

(Didn't know, where this should be posted, so I post it here too)

Hey, Ron
I think, the administrator of a forum, might often come to a point like this. A main reason must be, that some threads or single contributions trigger off chain reactions of "writing-before-thinking" fireworks. So, within a short time, a lot of b......t may be piled up with no effort brainwise.
I hope and wish for you and your great work all this time, that you will get over this, catch a deep breath, and go on with all the others of us, who deeply appreciate this good forum.
Personnaly, I have gone through some very bad time the last two years. Then I came across this forum and the great "OFF family", and since, I'm in here 3 - 4 times every day. I made a donation, cause I understand, all this must be kept going somehow. And I want to say a big "thank you" for all this - I'm so glad, I can be here!
Don't throw all this away for the unawareness of some of those people, you'll find everywhere. I'd really like to encourage you to carry on, as I can't imagine to find another Forum like this anywere again.

Hope, all this is understandable, as I'm German, and don't know, if my English was used correct.
I want to wish you a sound and happy New Year 2009, Ron. Carry on!

after reading post #66 of the Icon thread, it is clearly stated the intent was NOT to call Ickie a dictator. So why does Ickie insist on this word? :isadizzy:
Some cooling out is needed methinks. MudMarine has a big mouth, and everybody reading the forums where he posts know it. So why all this fuss about ONE member? Isn't it a bit harsh on all the members here to be penalized because of one person? Isn't it more revealing of the burden on Ickie to have this tiny straw break his back?

I can totally understand Ickie's frustrations, I've done the job back when I ran my Hell's Angels support forum, it's not an easy job. He has way more users to administer than I did, each with their own unique personalities.

I hope he does reconsider his statement and stays on. This is a big site and many folks from all corners of the globe visit it. Which naturally brings out the good and bad of human nature. Email and forums are not at all the best means of communications, and the feelings behind the statements are often mis-understood.

It would be a huge loss to the Flight Sim community if we lost this site. But also realize that it's our responsibility to react properly and understand as well. We just visit, he as to maintain it. There is a big difference.

Not too long ago, we had our own "BS" Icon debate on this forum that was shutdown. To me, it was all in good fun and just a joke, but to other members on other forums they took it to the next level. It's really not worth it.

I'm glad we follow our forum rules here and keep things tight. See what happenes when you don't?

So with that, whatever he decides is OK with me. If he closes it, OFF will relocate. We have to, we have a responsibility to the fans.

All the best,

OvS

Considering the starting point (all this fuss about one emoticon, djeeeez!), it makes all of it even more ridiculous.
Well, like most here, I'd hate to see SOH go. But this will not be the end of the world either. Anyway, only Ickie has the answer, and we will have to accept his decision. It's his time, his work (and we should all be thankful), and he doesn't owe us anything. Quite the opposite.

TOTALLY AGREE with you on this, How soul destroying it must be to have all the hard work & effort to start up, & keep running such a great worthy site like this, then to have some inconsiderate, rude & arrogant users who don't really give a damn, or care to have a real interest in the sites to muddy the waters - (to put it politely)

If they cant be asked to follow the rules laid down by the people who run & manage the site, they shouldnt have joined in the first place!!!!

The simplest way would be to vote to remove these destructive people from the site altogether - keep it for the people who really value the site, & who want to see it continue -AND LONG MAY IT CONTINUE TO DO SO....

You can't please all of the people all of the time, it is impossible. What you do for one upsets another. We know what it takes to make and maintain something like this with members of the public from all walks of life popping in over years. It is very painful and takes a lot of time and effects your life badly (guys in OFF team know that very well). Thanks to SOH and staff for hosting OFF forum and other forums over the years we appreciate it :ernae:. But the fate of the site is in the hands of the guys doing it, if you want to carry on or not etc. The members can say "thanks" more often, or beg you keep it open, and some may donate, but that's all - end of the day it's down to the people that run it to go with what they feel is right.

Backup plan

I would hope that S.O.H. would stay as it is a melting pot for a lot of simmer's out there.

But i would also hope the O.F.F. team has a backup plan in their hip pocket just in case this forume is shut down.

We in the boy's of 60 have our own forume for our simming activities but still use and appreciate this forume as well.

i recall someone offering to take S.O.H. over in it's entirety on the FSX forume and this may also be a possibility if the present situation is just to much for admin to handle.

i do know that all that has been done for us in the past has not been taken for granted and is by and large very much appreciated by the simming community.

time will tell what the future holds,it would be best for all to have a backup plan in place if indeed S.O.H. does shut down.

PD

I agree with PD. If this place was shut down it would be a tragedy. I love it here. And I do hope OFF team has a backup plan just in case also. As long as OFF has a home, I have a home.

You can't please all of the people all of the time.

Absolutely right!

I can well imagine the frustration in having to administer SOH. Hopefully, this incident will cool down, blow over, and we will carry on. It appears to have grown out of proportion, but that doesn't make the admin job any easier.

Taken in context, I'm guessing that 98% or 99% of the members are probably happy and content for 98% or 99% of the time! We are like one big extended family with the occassional squable, heated argument, or disagreement. I wish that everyone could be respectful, sensitive and polite at all times but wanting that wish to come true is like believing in both the Easter Bunny AND the Tooth Fairy! (OK, I still believe in the bunny...a little). It will never happen.

After spending several years on the CFS2 forum I learned that you need a bit of a thick skin so that you can sometimes ignore things directed toward you that sound mean or tactless. In fact they are not always necessarily meant to be, so it calls for some caution. Some members are pretty abrupt with their criticizms but they don't think of themselves as being 'nasty'. Of course, other times, comments are definitely meant to be abrasive, without a doubt, and that can be hard to take (particularly if you are the one knocking yourself out to provide a service that is essentialy free).

Still, it shouldn't jepordize the very existence of the SOH. However, if the CEO and his team have had enough of dealing with issues, what can I say that would really help? I can praise them and thank them because they certainly deserve accolades, but unless someone else wants to take on the job of running this operation...??

I just hope that Ickie gets a boost from the show of support and realizes that 98% or 99% of us are truly grateful and very appreciative of his time and work in keeping the SOH operating.
