As if I haven't had enough excitement with my computer in the last year or so, I now have another gremlin in the works somewhere. A few days ago I started noticing that while I was moving my mouse around, it would sometimes lock and then release and along with that was the sound that windows has for something that is "connecting" and "disconnecting". The same thing you would get if you disconnected a USB peripheral and then reconnected it. Only problem was, I wasn't doing that, lol.

One of the things I was in the process of doing was running the "Windows Experience Index". Only problem was that after it ran it basically said "Sorry, we can't do this right now, you have a problem". It was very nonspecific so I have no idea where the problem was(is). So I ran it one more time and it locked up. I did ctr+alt+del but to no avail. it was locked up tight. I turned the system off and let it sit for about 30 minutes then tried again. . .and again. . .and again. It would turn on, but not boot. You can imagine what I was thinking. . .the end is finally here. I'm broke and so is the computer.

I started looking for anything that could be loose enough that possibly that's what the problem was. I pulled both connections to my second HDD and reseated those but made no difference, so I pulled and reseated the two for the main HDD, turned the system back on and up it came.

So, is it remotely possible that my only problem is that the connections are loose enough to give that intermittent freeze up and windows error tone or am I looking at something more sinister? I'm headed to bed now as it's about 1:20am. If the computer will cooperate in the morning, I'll log in and see what wisdom has been heaped on me, lol

Thanks!:salute:

Ok, maybe I was too specific by saying Ted or a computer guru. . .anyone at all wanna jump in here, it isn't going away, lol.

No special wisdom here, I'm sorry to say, but if the connections on the main drive are suspect and the drive stops working because of it, the result could be a freeze-up.

The only problem I've had that was similar, was on my old system. I had several drives attached and every once in a while one or more would not show up in Windows XP. So I would shut'er down unplug the drives, plug them back in and start up, and there they'd be.

Now lately, I have been getting that Windows USB plug/unplug warning sound, but I believe it had to do with my running a small table fan near my rig. Turns out to be a not-so-good idea.

Sorry for not being more help.

I have never had that happen Ed but reload your motherboard usb files from your mainboard disk. That should clear it up. I have heard the usb refresh can go wonkers, just never had it happen.

Oh man. . .well, isn't it always the obvious? lol. . .I mentioned that the mouse cursor would freeze up and then be fine again. . .well. . .it's the mouse, lol. More specifically the wire from the mouse to the USB connection and it appears to be right where the wire enters the mouse. This one doesn't have the ball on the underside, just a red light. . .I started moving the wire at that point and noticed the light going off and on as I did and with that was the windows sound for disconnect/connect. Mystery solved. . .now why the system wouldn't boot. . .that could still be the HDD cable connects and why the "Windows Experience Index" wouldn't run is still a mystery as well.

Look in your Bios and see if it says stop boot if mouse or keyboard is disconnected. Some boards don't let you check it but it is worth looking. I the mouse is wonky it could report as not connected and that would stop the boot
