For the FPS investigation

Hi airmen,

was just tweaking around with the sliders, to get rid of the "airfield fps drop". prior settings were 4-3-3-4-1, and it dropped to mid 10th on and above the airfield.
So I maxed every slider to 5. Single digits show, around 4 fps. Then switched the cloud slider to one.......guess what?

:woot: I have now 20+ frames on the field, full flight, me plus 5 wingies, and the enemy comes in with max aircraft in QC. After take off, the fps went up to mid 30th in a furball over the field. No stutters, nothing.

Are the clouds the bottleneck? I will check it in a campaign flight later.

Cheers

Dunno.....but that whole scenario screams "Defy Logic". Do let us know what happens....

Interesting thanks, but so many other variables... is the weather changed? Same field/squad etc?

Campaign flight done. Location: Bailleul Asylum, Patroling friendly lines, weather changing, cloudy with sun. average Alt. about 6000ft. own flight 5 Bristol scouts, take off with 20+ frames, next cities to look at: Ypres, and flown over Amienterres.

During flight, frames reaches up to 50 fps, while looking at the frontline it decreases to 20-22 fps. Down on the deck it reaches back to 30+ frames.

We ran into a flight of EIII`s between Amienterres and the frontline, with heavy artillery and flakfire. I never had less than 20 fps, regardless, where I looked at. During Furball action, I noticed about 40 fps. I was so strucked to the FRAPS, that I missed every shot, anyway, Flak dealt with them.

Returned home, and landed smoothly, with 20-24 fps. There were a crash site with smoke. Captain digged it in.

More to come later, have to walk the dog, and do some shopping.

Cheers

From your friendly neighborhood "FPS Knight." Have to keep a watch out for resolving this one :)

I tweaked a little wit the CFSconfig, but that is not yet to be mentioned.

I need a little more testing

I played with the Clouds setting last night and it also seemed to make a big difference for me - more than Terrain or Scenery.

Gents I run clouds at 1 and have plenty of them to spare and they are beautiful. I get low 30's FPS over the field, in a fur ball. I get low 40's over the front and steady 50-55 otherwise, get dang close to 60 FPS at times. I am just thrilled. Smooth flying and a nice personal skin and an EIII campain still going after 5 flights. Maybe soon I'll try MP. I need a head tracker tho, too many blind spots with just the hat. Clouds at 1 and Vertical sync set to "Force off" has made all the difference for me. Cheers.

Due to my limited understanding, of what sliders in the custom setting windows affect to, I was not able to get any better results on that FPS issue.

I never, NEVER, thought I'd say this, but I love Vista Ultimate 64!!! I highly recommend it for OFF! I went from 20-30fps on XP to 50-60 with Vista64 SP1 on the same settings. :ernae: Yes, this is in Campaign mode over the front. Takeoff's see similar FPS.

I just wiped my Sager NP8660 lappy clean with a clean copy of V64 onto its 128gb SSD HD. The copy I have is pure with no extra crap, after disabling certain services and startup processes, I idle around 48 processes. I applied the same settings and Nvidia tweaks I had been using when it was an XP system. The SSD I don't think has anything to do with it, as it was running on XP as well. I did recently disable the page-file and indexing service in order to keep it from wearing out too fast, as it isnt needed on that sort of HD. Wonder if that contributed at all.

I dunno if it's the 64-bit architecture or being able to use all 4gb of RAM now (I'm guessing thats it), but this puppy screams. Perhaps, this is goodbye XP, dear friend........

My specs if anyone is wondering:

Sager NP8660 (M860TU Clevo)
Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 @ 2.53Ghz
4.00 GB RAM
Nvidia GeForce 9800M GT 512mb
128GB Transcend SSD Hard Drive

Running OFF in 1440x900x32 (external monitor)
5,5,3,3,4,1 (I will have to play with it, because now I have tons of FPS to mess with)
AAx8, AFx16 + Tweaks found on here....

So amazed, just had to tell someone. Anyone else find improvement with 64-bit Vista?

Well for one, you're seeing full 4 GB of RAM with Vista 64 vs XP's 32 bit limitations with RAM.

Right, but I honestly didn't think it would make that much difference. Opened a whole new world for me haha. I had never messed with 64 bit OS's before, I would have with XP if there was any sort of support for it in ANYTHING but we all know how that goes. Anyways, real happy with that improvement.

I just started running Vista 64 too, and I'm impressed. I tried Vista when it first came out and quickly ran screaming back to XP. But they seem to have ironed out the problems.

I say ! Is this kind of offensive language allowed here ? Where's Admin ? ... hello HELLOOOOOO ? Windows 7 for me  Vista is history .... and M$ knows it ;)

I'm with you! Hopefully Windows 7 will what XP was to W98 instead of another Millenium edition that Vista was/is...

Wow, that SSD is half of the price of the rest ... just kidding.

Your 64 Bit OS allows the use of the whole 4 GB of RAM but 32 Bit programs running under Windows are limited to use up to 2 GB of RAM. That's a Microsoft 'feature'.

I agree Queeg, I did the exact same thing. Then on a whim acquired a copy just to have and gave it a shot because I was bored. I don't know what they did (at first release it was indeed a nightmare of M.E. proportions), but its been smooth sailing ever since, and that's all around.

Yeah the SSD was about $250 on Ebay if I remember right, a Transcend 2.5" SATA. Not the highest of quality, but it works great. I boot relatively quickly and everything whips around pretty good. I haven't timed it or anything, but there is no sign of hard-drive wait periods or sluggishness since installing.

Catch, I will gladly take my called-for beatings and stand by my word! haha
