For those who like float planes....got three for ya

Over on Flightsim.com, do a search for Steven Grant. He did 3 fun float planes (4 counting his Dehav Beaver) that I am having a ball with.

Found BushHawk XP, Aviat Husky A1-B and Rans S-7 Courier.

All three in float format, also wheels and/or tundra tires for the Husky and Courier.

The Found BushHawk XP is my most recent Steven Grant floater addition. It looks like what would happen if a De Havilland Beaver and a Gippsland AirVan were to have a love child. Smaller than the Beaver, has the boxy fuselage and horizontally opposed engine of the Gippsland..but has that unmistakable Beaverish charm. The VC is dated by today's standards...but more than adequate. The paint that comes with the plane lacks detail....which I am working on in Photoshop.

OBIO

Oh...some of these planes are FS2002 Pro planes...but they work just fine in FS9....just need some tweaks....like Shockwave lights and some better effects swapped in.

Also...grab his Maule 760 or something like that....and the update package. Like 6 variants....amphib, tricycle, tail dragger with oleo struts, tail dragger with spring gear, with tundra tires, with snow skis. Very nicely modeled....inside and out. Looks great from every angle and is a real hoot to fly....study the flaps though....when you have flaps in the 100% up position, they actually work in reverse...decreasing lift and getting the plane down FAST! Never seen flaps that decrease lift before...but it makes shedding alt to get to your bush strip really easy.

The Maule, Model M7-260, was originally done by Mikko Maliniemi. There are LOTS of paints out ther for it and, as you mentioned, OBIO, an upgrade package. Worth a look - definietly

Good recommendations Tim, have to check them out.

Mind you, if you are on Flightsim searching for Steven Grant's models, it is a crime not to download the DHC Otter & Beaver; not floatplanes, granted, but the ultimate bushplanes & he has done a cracking job. :salute:

another worth looking at that i enjoy is the Long island Classics Scout, has Floats and is a regular in my sim, one of the first few re-installed in a new install (usually after my much loved F-104's)

Thanks for the HU Tim. Looking forward to see what you come up with in the paint shop.
The idea of the "negative" deflection of the flaps on the Maule as I recall is to decrease drag while in cruise flight so that you can get where you are going faster or for less fuel burn.

Cheers
Stefan

I thought it was a small mod glitch until photos showed the small deflection. In fact I sort of thought the opposite, that the flaps were normal and the ailerons were deflected down a bit. Is the glass half empty or half full?

Below is part of the official sales brochure for the current model. For landing the POH recommends the 40 or 48 degree setting.

Maule Unique Standard Features: • Flap -7 Degree Setting for Increased Cruise Speed • Four Doors and Four Seats • Easy Access Rear Passenger/Cargo Doors: Open Away from Each Other which Allows for Ease of Loading of Long Objects • Side-by-Side Pilot and Copilot Seating • Side-by-Side Passenger Seating • Quick Removal Rear Passenger Seats for Large Volume Loading

Cheers

Steven Grant did a float version of the Beaver...not sure about the Otter...since the Otter does not have a VC, I don't use it.

Mmmmmm....Otters.

Go search Eugene Heyart at any of the big flightsim sites. DHC-3 Otters, turboprop, or PZL radial upgrade, amphibian, floats, & wheels, plumped up virtual cockpits. Plenty'o'paints. Wish he's done a Pratt&Whitney Otter, much more attractive to my eye than any newer upgrades & variants. Hence...the Steven Grant model is maintained as AI, less for the want of a VC.

Also, Brian Gladden's venerable Noorduyn Norseman packages, wheels, floats, funky, mucho repaints. Simple but reasonably evocative virtual cockpit. Load your guns for moose & bear. Get a powerful soundset, in real life these machines should evoke deafness (even with headset) and permanent white knuckle/hand/arm vibration syndrome. You have to wear a plaid makinaw to get into the spririt of this one.

Found Bush Hawk is a real aeroplane btw --> http://www.foundair.com/

And while its not exactly a 'floater' (its a little boat) don't forget the RSDG Lake Renegade too; can be found at Flightsim

The PZL radial is actually a copy of a Wright Cyclone R1820

...Yeah....the earlier P&W was the R-1340 series, about 600 HP. The original DHC design had a longer cowl, nicely flaired into the fuselage. The PZL radial displays a shorter nose, with a simple cowling ring. Not so attractive looking in some regards. Certainly 1000 hp is more usable in a truck like the Otter, provided the commercial side of Ops can keep the fuel costs viable.

My statement of preferance was based solely on visuals, a luxury we can enjoy in flightsim. Gas, maintenance, parking and insurance are only ones and zeros, a lousy landing can be solved by hitting Ctrl-R or slew, and if you don't like the weather, access the weather menu and change it.

Sigh....

With that, I'm off to pull out those Steven Grant models listed above, and re-aquaint. :guinness::guinness:

I picked up Steven Grant's Husky, really nice (with Tundra Tires). I've been flying it in FSX, Redid the VC, all new external paint w/HiRes textures. . . .only drawback is the dang prop disc. Tried finding a way to eliminate the disc w/MDLMat but no-joy. Still I love flying it. Thanks for the HU OBIO!!:salute:
