For use in P3D V5 RTX 2070 Super or 2080 TI?

jmig

SOH-CM-2025
I am planning on upgrading one of my GTX 790 cards for either the RTX 2070 Super or the RTX 2080 TI.

The new card will be used for the outside view, via a1080P projector. The RTX 2070 Super seems to be the best bang for the buck. I do not need 100 + fps. I am not an gamer and the computer this card will be in is strictly used for a simulator cockpit.

However, my quandary is with the VRAM amount. The RTX 2080TI has 3 Gb more VRAM. However, it is about twice as much as the RTX 2070. I am having a hard time justifying that price difference emotionally. I can afford the more expensive card, but is it worth the difference? Will the three extra GBs or VRAM be that important in V5?

Also, while my computer is still strong it isn't cutting edge. Can the CPU handle the RTX 2080TI?

I am asking for thoughts and advice before I purchase. My computer specs are listed below. Also, the second card GTX 970 is used to run two touch screen monitors that have the instruments and GTN Complete through detached views.

Thanks,

Wait till the September-October. You can take RTX 3070,
it will cheaper than RTX 2080Ti with not worse performance I suppose.

I have thought of waiting. However, I am planning on upgrading the sim and doing a clean install focused on V5.

I have also considered looking into a used 1080P TI for now, then looking into another 30's card at the end of the year. The 1080P could then either become the secondary card or move it to this computer (the one I am writing on and use for my photography images and general purposes) to replace the 970 card. This would help out with Photoshop.

John, you've sparked my interest in the 2070 Super. I always try not to buy the latest of the breed as the price difference is huge. I looked it up and it seems like a very reasonable and affordable replacement for my 970.

From 970 you will have on every GPU from this list big jump. :biggrin-new:
Super is nice series also.

For sure I will! The price difference between the 2070 Super and the 2080 Ti or even the 2080 is staggering! Order may be placed very soon, together with a new PSU to cover it!:biggrin-new:

I’ve got a 2070 Super running V5 and I’m happy with it. Still chasing settings but running everything, not running out of VRAM. I’d love to have 11 gigs with a 2080 but that price is just too much. Highest VRAM seen is probably 5.8 or so with the CS 757 and True Earth.

cheers,
steve :wavey:

John, I splashed out on four (4!) Geforce RTX 2080Ti 11G cards as I sold a couple of bikes and decided to build a couple of new systems.
'Her Indoors' has been away working in one of our 'City' hospitals so she doesn't know about #2 build .........:encouragement:

Started late last year on the 'sanctioned' build and opted for a pair of
ASUS Turbo GeForce RTX 2080 Ti 11GB cards because they pack a punch and are physically small enough to fit my chosen case(s).
Combined with an i9 they really give me outstanding graphics so they were a natural for the 'unsanctioned' system.
Certainly the next generation might ('might') be better but they will be in short supply (another COVID-19 legacy) and aside from demand the price will be high.

She will hurt me when she finishes ministering to the sick but I've always lived life on the edge......:pirate:

You are more adventurous in working the sweetheart than I. Two RTX 2080Ti are too rich for my blood. I have too many expensive hobbies to support. I need to spread the hobby funds around.

I went ahead and ordered a RTX 2070 Super. If it doesn't workout, I will use it as my second card and go bigger later in the year. I also purchased a 2TB M2 drive. I plan on putting P3D and associated sceneries on it. Hopefully, it will load quicker and run more smoothly.

What do you know! I just did the same thing!:dizzy: At least for me and my pocket I'm almost certain it is the right choice. I hope to soon be able to spend the price difference with the 2080 on Avgas, once the NOTAM of banning GA flights over here is lifted...

My 2p/2c is to buy a 2nd hand 1080ti, which has stood the test of time in light of the worse VFM 2080s. That way you could either consider upgrading to the 3000 series later this year, if they fulfill their promise, or stick with an already great card. I don't think VFM would get any better than that.

This might show the way I looked at the options John.
I went for a small(er) size build, and I might have considered reusing the pair of GALAX 1080s as an interim measure but they were just too big.
On the other hand, the GTX 2080 Ti is shorter and considerably slimmer, ideal for my downsized concept.
That's my story and I'm sticking with it!

Ever think of trading in video cards as a side line to go with the bikes. ;) I imagine that you can get some insane graphics with those two cards. As I said above, I am going to try the RTX 1070 Super. From what I read on the forums, it seems that 8 GBs of VRAM works for 90% of the simmers. I think I can live with 90%. Currently, I am running mid range, with exception of autogen sliders, and, so far I have only one OOM crash. That is with the 4GB 970.

If I can't stand it (fortunately I have both the Nikon Z6 and Z7 cameras) I will put off getting the new 500mm lens that Nikon keeps teasing me with but hasn't delivered yet, and get a 11GB card.

The new card should be here mid next week. Either today or tomorrow, I plan on taking the system down and resetting Windows to baby butt clean. I will then move P3D and add-ons to a new M2 SSD. Afterwards.....two weeks of fiddling and cursing as I tweak the system. :redfire: Why do we inflict such pain on ourselves? We simmers must be psychologically off somewhere. :playful:

I just finished installing the new 2070 Super. It is the Asus one with the cover, just like the one Wombat shows in the pic, only it is a 2070 and not 2080. the new 1000W modular PSU also made everything inside look much more neat. I took out everything, including the tons of dust, changed the arctic silver in the CPU fan and put it all back together. It runs very quietly and smoothly. I just had a short flight over my WIP KBAB in v5 with pretty much everything maxed out and I'm quite happy. More testing is needed but initial feel is very good.

Hope you get yours soon John.

jmig, because of the hardware changes and windows reinstall you'll need to re-activate P3D but first you'll need to un-activate it on your current system.

You could probably get away with backing up your current install somewhere and then uninstalling before stripping your PC down, reinstalling after the rebuild and then copying the backup over the top.

Don't forget to backup any files in C:\Users\YOUR NAME\Documents\Prepar3D v5 Files,
C:\Users\YOUR NAME\Documents\Prepar3D v5 Add-ons,
C:\ProgramData\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v5,
C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Local\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v5
& C:\Users\YOUR NAME\AppData\Roaming\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v5

:concern: Now you tell me! :encouragement: I've backed it up and deactivated both P3D and VRS. Waiting on the new SSD. Windows has been refreshed.

The video card change alone does not affect P3D activation status. Reinstallation of Windows may do.

I have the RTX 2070 Super and it runs very well with P3Dv5, with everything maxed out. I'm sur the 2080Ti will be even better, it just depends how much you want to spend.

Regards,
Ian
