Jane's Strike Eagle sim had a mission where you'd have to duck the SAMs, avoid the MiGs, drop the ordnance, fight your way out...and then came the HARD part.
Running on fumes, you'd have to find the tanker and connect, first time, otherwise...
White knuckles and armpits drenched with sweat, now that's flight simulation!
This clip answers a question I had about how flexible the boom might be - #3 probably used up most of the latitude there.
I guess the USAF will eventually succumb to Hose 'n Drogue, everyone else has.

I doubt it very much. There is a small element of USAF KC-135's that have the drogue and basket, and the KC-10's have a D&B secondary system, but these are mainly to support the US Navy. The USAF F-100's and A-37's of 30 years ago had probes for the D&B, and F-4's and F-105's had an optional probe that would pop out of the side, but those days are long gone. The USAF will never have anything except booms and receptacles for it's planes.
