Found a teardrop trailer: road trip to Michigan soon!

I got a tip on a camper forum about a teardrop trailer for sale in Michigan, and I am headed north to get it!

Only thing delaying me is no hitch on my car. But that will be remedied by next Monday morning.

Am taking my Rottweiler, "Chief" with me. This should be an adventure!

I am psyched! I plan to test out the camper on the way back.

Awesome, and its pure wood! A rare classic.

May you experience great times camping with that trailer.

Now I am concerned about the weight of the trailer. The guy who's selling doesn't know exactly, and that is an important factor.

My HHR is only rated for 1000 pounds, and anything over that could cause damage to the transmission. One of the guys on a Teardrop forum I belong to said his wooden teardrop weighs in at 1425 lb. I emailed the seller and asked if he can somehow check the weight. The last thing I want to do is drive up there, pay for the trailer, hook it up to my car, and then discover it is too heavy to tow!!!

Yeah, need to check that. If you can determine the manufacturer - they should know precise weights.

The problem is, the seller doesn't know how old the trailer is. He has refinished it and all, but doesn't have that info. The title SAYS 1000 lb, but I don't trust that.

He's going to call a truck repair facility tomorrow that HOPEFULLY has scales.

Some landscape supply places that sell rock, mulch and soil have full size drive-on scales mounted at ground level. If you could find one of those you'd be able to back just the trailer onto the scale and get an accurate weight.

I never really thought much about teardrop trailers, but this thing is really cool! That wood looks awesome!

Hopefully it'll work out for you!

Junk yards have scales and for about $20 they will weigh anything. As far as damage to your car, you can install a transmission cooler that will do wonders for that. I got well over 200,000 miles out of a GMC 1500 pickup with a 350 turbo trans.

tranny cooler
tranny cooler
did I say tranny cooler.

Do yourself a favor and extend the life of your tranny, get a cooler. (Them american made plastic parts in the transmissions cannot handle even a little bit of heat.) On my 32 year old Dodge van, I have a big RV cooler I installed and I bi-passed the radiator cooler.

The trailer is addictive, and you will learn that you are limited to what you buy by the size of the trailer, lol, I have left piles of stuff at camp grounds.

My brother has an old 50's teardrop he got for $200 from a person who had a tranny problem in a camp ground I was living in.

Have Fun and be Safe.

Any scrap yard with a set of scales should be able to weight it with the proper approach.

I know in the past my father has used the scales at a scrap yard to weigh certain vehicles.

What he will have to do is pull his vehicle and the trailer on the scales and get an ititial weight, pull off and detatch the trailer then pull back on without the trailer and then subtract the raw vehicle weight versus the initial weight.

Just one option.

There are scales not far from the seller's house. But whether he'll take the trailer to get it weighed......I don't know yet. I hope to hear from him this morning. Whether I buy it or not, he still needs to get it weighed, because buyers need to know. As for a tranny cooler, yes I have thought about it, but I still have to get a hitch installed!!! But I will look into it. Thanks.
