Fox News story on F-22 problems

Fox News currently has on its home page an article discussing in detail allegedly unknown problems with the F-22 that have resulted in the death of at least one pilot, near-death experiences for others, and a number of others who are reportedly refusing to fly the aircraft due to safety concerns. Reportedly, these concerns are related to pilots blacking out from anoxia, caused by an alleged defect in the aircraft's oxygen system.

Cutting-edge aircraft always have problems, but I'm not aware of any past effort by the Air Force to muzzle its pilots, even within the service, regarding discussing problems with aircraft. I can understand not discussing it with the media, for security purposes - but among themselves (if this is to be believed)?

It has been noted that some F-22's have had issues with their OBOGS system (Onboard oxygen generation system) which replaced the conventional green LOX (Liquid oxygen) bottles like we had on the Legacy Hornet ... will wait for more up to date USAF types here at SOH to let us know ... Mike

I am surprised this is recieving the attention that it is at this moment. Leads me to think someone is looking to use it to their advantage. This has been an ongoing issue for at least a year and a half now, and came to light after that pilot planted it into the mountain side in Alaska. My wife mentioned something to me about this being in the paper today, and I thought she was kidding. Guess we will find out why it is being drug out into the open at this very moment at some point.

This reminds me somewhat of an issue that the F-16 had that turned out to be a routing issue with the electrical cabling. The route of the
wiring took it around a nut or bolt and over time, stress caused the cabling to wear through causing issues. As I remember, it caused some
crashes and at least one pilot's death who was inverted and didn't know it.

They made a TV movie about it, but don't recall the name of it. How true to fact it was I don't know, but for this particular pilot the cause of
the crash was "pilot error" and after his widow helped bring it to light, they reversed the cause of the accident.

An electrical fault sounds plausible as OBOGS have been around since the '80s & were fitted to AV8B & the UK equivalents. I was connected with airborne trials of the Bendix & the Normalair versions when I was at Farnborough. I think the Normalair 3 bed version was used the the B1.

On the F-16, back in the 80s for a while they were calling it a "Texas Lawn Dart". I think the Belgian Air Force lost a couple of them to that problem as well.

at the end of the day, uncle sam only wants an aircraft capable of defending the country better than anything else. i would think they'll get it it sorted out in due time.

Odie

The movie was called "Afterburn".

That one has always been easy for me to remember because it had Laura Dern in it. :)

Just checked and Netflix has it.

Thanks FAC! As soon as I read Laura Dern in your post the memory came back....

I am wondering if the F-22 isn't doomed to sit out its service life, without firing a shot in anger.

It's a very valuable and scarce asset, so no US commander would commit it unless the threat were commensurate.
But no other country has anything to challenge it, and so no-one would willingly go up against it!
So it's going to sit at home base, looking dangerous... even if it's grounded.

And in doing this, mission accomplished.....In building the F-22, the decision was deliberately made to skip the next generation
of fighters and go straight into the next. It's kind of like owning a firearm....it's better to have one and not need it, than need
one and not have it.

This is also why having the nuclear triad, and the massive nuclear weapons stockpile, worked so well - they were such deadly weapons, and the delivery systems so highly developed and accurate, using them was unthinkable. This means there was no general war since the weapons' inception in 1945, as a general (world) war would almost certainly have entailed their use. Maybe MAD wasn't so mad after all!
