You could also download and run FRAPS (www.fraps.com) and give you a little FPS counter in the corner of your choice. The bonus would be that you can use it to take screenies and videos of your exploits.
 
Yes, Fraps is good, works very well and the screenshot facility is good, although I changed the default screenshot key from F10 to Backspace
