Fraps continues its assault on my sanity ....

Frappin' hell this video capture program is giving me grief ! I am still cursed with it crashing immediately after pressing the record button the 2nd time to stop recording and being left with a corrupted useless 4gb file.

Google it and many have the same issue but no-one has exactly nailed why or what the solution is ? Plenty of completely useless information though ;)

2 things I haven't tried ....

  • Removing old fraps data from the registry after uninstall and prior to new install. Can anyone provide tips on exactly where to go/what files to remove/how to do this ?
  • Updating nvidia drivers. BTW the new 180.48 whql drivers are now available. I'll give that a shot first and see if that makes any difference ...
but I'm not at all confident and close to giving fraps the old heave ho and move on .... my gut feel is making it vista :barf: compatible is screwing up xp users. Or I'm just paranoid and have no idea what I'm talking about :costumes: :icon_lol::banghead: la la lalala lala la la lala lalalala :isadizzy:

The really annoying thing is it worked fine on my old pc with about half the grunt of my new one :kilroy:

help me I'm shrinking .....

Try using Virtualdub to load the corrupted AVI. It'll reconstruct the block index and it'll be good as new :)

As for the crashes themselves - yeah, not sure how to fix that. I have enough of my own issues with using Fraps.. :(

Do you record to a USB disk Catch? Try a local drive if so.

Yeah other than that remove it from add remove programs, run ccleaner to clean the reg, then install it fresh.

Somebody help fix it....we can't have our lengthiest member shrinking on us now, can we.....:redf:

Ok. I'm no whiz on it. But here's what helped me. When filiming durring OFF phase 2. I had happen what you described. I would simply reboot my tower . When fraps was activated. It would ask if id like to save the file. Yes . Worked most time at giving me back my edited files. Not always. Very frustrating.
I also learned that after doing one film save. That it was for me to do a reboot again. That seemed to eliviate the problem of corrupted "finished product " files durring the next filming and saveing session. But again for me thats what worked.
I record @ 1/2 size 60fps and when i save i try to keep them under 25 mb.
I have noticed the longer the clip..better chance of it happening.
Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions guys. And good to see you back badcat ! Where the hell have you been ? Have you got a note ! It's well to remember that it was you and the fine and upstanding member Parky that got me into this fraps lark in the first place with some invaluable tips !

Okay I've sort of fixed it. I took the scary plunge into the very bowels of XP's registry . I figured fraps can't get any worse (in its current state was totally unusable for reliable video capture) so if this doesn't fix it no harm done.

So I uninstalled fraps, searched for "frap" and deleted entries, did the ccleaner thing then rebooted.

Backed up registry and system files.

Then dived into .... "THE REGISTRY" .... searched for all files with "frap" in the name ensuring they were indeed linked to fraps. Deleted all entries until it was clean.

Rebooted with fingers crossed.

Booted up fine. Reinstalled fraps.

Result: no longer crashes after pressing the stop record button and managed to collect quite a few clips varying from 30 secs to 3 minutes with no problems. The downside is it has reverted to recording vids at 1/2 the FPS set in fraps. I have it set to capture at 25fps but it records at around 12 so it's jittery as all hell .... but at least it's not crashing :d

So I can live with it as it's only mildly annoying now as opposed to giving me the :bs:badly. BTW Parky, you're fix for the half speed issue didn't work in my case.

Anyone else have suggestions about this particular problem ?

You aren't running SLI catch?? Or maybe you have some cpu affinity thing going on there?

Why not set 60fps so you get 30 ? :)

No not running SLI Pol. Can you enlighten me on the cpu affinity thing. I have suspected this myself but not sure how to test/fix ? Any solution greatly appreciated :)

I may just try your suggestion of setting it to 60fps to see if I get 30 while recording lol. Now that would be funny if it fixes it !

Tried that when I was having the same problem. Didnt work. Was related specifically to anti-aliasing settings within the game software.

Catcher, you may have to experiment with the AA levels to get it to work. Set AA at the driver level. Start out with 2x and work your way up to 16x, testing fraps after every incremental change. Also make sure after you make the change in Nvidia, multi-sampling in that cfg file I mentioned earlier is set back to 0.

The only AA setting I can use where I dont see the exact same issue is 8x. It my be different on your hardware, but its worth a try. If it solves the problem, you owe me a beer. If not......sue me:d

Cheers Mate,

Parky

I sure owe you a beer Parky. :ernae:
Your fix worked for me when you suggested it some days ago. I only had this problem with OFF though. All other sims and FPS games recorded nicely. Setting the AA at the driver level for CFS3/OFF smoothened FRAPS capture. I only wanted to show OFF to my workmates though so don't expect any movies from me in the near future.:d

The guru has spoken. Thanks Parky. So it's just AA ? AF doesn't come into it and I can leave that alone ? (currently set to 4). I already have multi-sampling in the configoverridedw set to 0 ? But I have "multi-sampling" in nvidia switched on ! Maybe I should reset to none/off as well ? Perhaps that's the issue.

I'll test with all levels of AA tonight and see how she goes. Thanks again mate. You are a deadset technical guru legend :applause:

Not exactly. I just get lucky and stumble on a solution every once in while.....well not really stumble.....more like trip over it.....lol. Sometimes it's something just plain obvious.....like the problem in the pic below.

And yeah.....it seemed to me that AF didn't have any effect on it at my end. Was just the AA setting, and just as in Dimus's case, it only seemed to effect CFS3/OFF. All other apps recorded as they should. Weird to say the least, but I fear this may not be the fix on all configurations. Hopefully it'll work on your's.

Okay I have reached a compromise Parky ! I had to. I was becoming overly obsessive about it and it has been ruining my enjoyment of OFF. It's really is the darnedest thing this Fraps :frown:

Here's what happened ..... some AA selections resulted in being able to video at the right setting (but AA of 2 .... Man oh man ! I couldn't live with the jaggies! It's an insult to the developers !) and some resulted in filming at half the applied setting.

But .... when recording at the right level it would freeze :angryfir: while recording at half the set level it wouldn't. Go figure ? No don't .... 'cause you'll descend into madness.

So my compromise is I'll accept recording at 12-13 fps although it's a little stuttery but you get used to it. At least the playback plays at the set 25fps and smooths it out so the end result is fairly good. I just have to live with it and move on.

But at the end of the day it was a worthwhile exercise because I fiddled/tested quite a bit with the nvidia 3d settings and ended up with better quality and fps :)

And finally, I don't want to bore you guys any further with my fraps issues. I'm over it myself lol.
