its intresting that few Warsaw pack airforce's had these, maybe they were of little tactical use or maybe the Soviets like'd to keep the best for themselves. magnificent beast.
cheers ian

Think it must have been the tactical thing Ian, because they definitely didn't keep it to themselves; a goodly number were exported to their friends in Northern Africa & the Middle East, and the Indian AF took some of the recce version. Bearing in mind that it was originally designed for intercepting high-flying fast US strategic bombers (B-58 & B-70) it was probably of limited use in the Warpac theatre.

iirc Mike Pearson has also done a number of repaints for this excellent model, bound to be at Avsim and/or Flightsim.

Good link Andy, esp the use of the 25 over Israel and Iraqi use in the first Gulf war, it looks like Foxbats gave the Iraqis their only succses in that conflict.
cheers ian

Funny you should mention the Alphasim freeware MiG-25, Ian.... that plane, with all of those excellent repaints and AB effects gets regular air time from my virtual pilots too. I believe the repaints by pierre lheureux also include some improved VC textures. The model is very nice to look at in the spot view, is VERY SLIPPERY (excellent framerates), and with all the enhancements, basically is still the best freeware MiG-25 Foxbat I have found, even by today's standards.

The MiG-25 always has been a bit of an "enigma" and not too much is known about the plane. It was reported by some military pilots that the jet was incredibly fast, very close to mach 3. Some even admitted that the MiG-25 literally walked away from planes like the F-16 and the F-18. In the process of attaining those speeds, those big Tumanski engines suffered some considerable damage, alot of Foxbat drivers brought their 25's back to the airbase with damaged engines. Aside from that, in capable hands... as with any modern jet fighter, the Foxbat could have been a handful for anyone who had to go up against it.

The speed issue seems well represented in FS9, if your not paying attention, your approching 1000 knots just after raising the gear and flaps.

Had this model since it was first released . IIRC Stalin has some skins for the Alphasim Foxbat both single and double seater in the old archives.

Thanks for the heads-up, Ian. I already had the model, but didn't know about the textures. I remember very well when Victor Belenko defected with one of these. I cut the picture of the Foxbat half-covered with the tarp from the newspaper and probably still have it somewhere. I was a little boy at the time and this plane fascinated me. My father was Cold War era USAF and the idea that a Soviet fighter could be faster than a Yankee fighter didn't sit well with me. I felt a little better when I learned about the SR-71A. I used to have a really nice model of Belenko's a/c but I couldn't say what happened to it to save my life.

I was a line doggie at Luke AFB when Mr. Belenko defected with his MiG-25 and I well remember the stir it caused. F-15A Maintenance Admin was being called in to get briefings on what had been found out about the -25 and I remember hearing lots of talk from them about its structure and capabilities. I especially remember their surprise at the thing being built largely out of stainless steel. Something else that was amusing was the fact representatives of Japanese aircraft model firms somehow found out about this thing landing there and reportedly beat JASDF and USAF intel reps to the landing site, so they could take their measurements and get started on tooling for the model kit's dies. At least, that's what we were told.

That is pretty near spot on, from what I can recall; the guys from Hasegawa beat pretty much everybody, had their tape measures over that thing long before anybody from the USAF even got there.

The assumption about Foxbat, from the satellite pictures, was that it was going to be pretty manouevrable due to the large wing area; but when Mr Belenko defected they realised it needed that much wing because it was so darn heavy!!

What ever happen'd to his aircraft, im assuming it was taken to bits and examend, but it would be intresting to know if its on display anywhere.
cheers ian

I'm fairly sure it was returned to sender, but in airfix kit style, ready to be assembled, lol.

Would any of you gents happen to have the paint kit that came with the Foxbat when it was a payware item? I want to do some more colorful repaints for the bird....just a few...and having the factory paint kit would be a real time saver. If not...no big deal...I already have the fuselage side panel lines done up....can finish the rest of the paint kit from scratch as well.

Oh...I have reworked the lights and effects on the Mig-25....will post the tweaks soonish once I make sure they are all working 100%.

Thanks for shooting me the original Alphasim paint kit for the Mig-25. I took a look at it...and I don't like the way it is set up.....so I will be using the paint kit that I have worked up. Have the fuselage and wings done in terms of panel lines and grime. I did a lot of cleaning up of the lines...removing lines here and there to end up with a cleaner and crisper set of lines.

I have a WIP paint to share with ya'll. A nice two-tone blue-ish camo pattern. I am 99.99% certain that the Foxbat never wore these colors, but I like it so far.

Need to finish up the fuselage part of the camo, then create the layered paint kit for the vertical tail surfaces, the weapons pylons and the 2-seater extension.

I think this paint will become a Serbian Foxbat....don't seem to recall a single Serbian aircraft being done.

Georgia On My Mind, Georgia On My Mind

I have the first paint done for the Alpha Mig-25. I went with Georgia (the ex-Soviet Union Georgia, not the US peach growing state Georgia) with the paint as the Georgia rondel really looked good on the plane with the color scheme. Totally fictional of course, but I like it. Will do a few more paints then upload the paints, the light and effects tweaks as a package. Working on a cleaned-up version of the stock RED 20 Camo scheme now. Stock skin had those odd looking panel lines that looked more like panel gaps.

How about some new AA-6s for the Mig-25. More refined and detailed.....not hi detail, but much better than stock. Simply save the zip to your system, unzip and drop the bmp file into your Mig-25 texture folders.

Well, I live in the peach-growing state of Georgia, and my considered opinion is the shade-tree mechanics we've got down here could put a pair of wings on one of their cars and give this -25 a pretty good run for its money!
