FS9.1 update patch Question

I just reformatted the hard drive and installed FS9 again. I put a few addons in it and flew it around for awhile when I remembered I forgot to do the patch. Does the patch need to be done on a fresh install before anything is modified? It seems I read that somewhere a long time ago.
 
The update will look at a few files and if those files have been modified it will fail to install until you replace those files with the originals. It will tell you which ones they are you can pull them off the disc.
 
I have installed the 9.1 patch over an already modified install on several occasion and never experience a problem. However when you want to install Golden Wings, it is mandatory to install the 9.1 patch first.
