FS9, add-ons and Windows 7

Greetings, Everyone!

I am new to Sim-Outhouse and am excited to be here!

I began flight-simming in 2003, with a refurbished eMachines T6000, AMD Athlon 3200, ATI Radeon 9600, 512 RAM and 160 GB hard drive. My machine quickly became outdated with the complexity of new releases, so I stopped simming in about 2006.

Anyway, I decided to treat myself, for once, and build a computer, so now I'm back in the game. I had it built actually. ;-)

I do have a general question. I've Googled this whole compatibility issue and have run across some conflicting results. I did find a fairly in depth article written by a fellow simmer on another website, so 'll try to follow his suggestions for setting this up.

My question, is there a standard procedure for installing FS2004 on a Windows 7 operating system? I know the author said to TURN OFF UAC (user assisted control) and install FS9 in a newly created folder - instead of the root folder. Is this it?

Also, I have add-ons from payware developers as well as some freeware that I'd love to reinstall, too. Will there be any compatibility issues there?

Thanks in advance!

Darrin

You do NOT need to turn off the UAC stuff....just install FS9 to a folder outside of the stock Programs folder. I have my 4 installs of FS9 on a secondary drive dedicated to my sims and photoshop files. This way my sims are far removed from the UAC control stuff. I did have some issues with my original 3 installs.....but that was due to them being copied over from my archive disc and not set up from fresh installs. My most recent install....the one into which I moved those planes that I fly on a regular basis....is based on a fresh install and I have had no issues with it what so ever.

Running Win 7 here too; I concur , put FS9 folder outside stock programs folder, then you won't fall foul of 'this action needs trusted installer'
UAC protection (good for Windows, not good for FS tweeks)

In addition; when adding scenery to library; you'll have to right click (instead of left for normal config mouse set-ups)
in the window at one point as per adding scenery to FSX library (if you have X :icon_lol: )

With payware.. took me awhile to get my cloud9 zipper (F-104) accepted... had to re-d/l the bglman thingy and install that
last.

Thank you all! I will leave the UAC alone and simply create a new folder dedicated solely to FS9.

;)

I'd still ax the uac, just to save cpu cycles. Cpus are more versital these days, but underpowered for fs in some ways. Check my posting on gauges and fps for more details on why.

Can we have a link to the thread you referenced?

And how do we disable UACs? (Or a link to some instructions?)

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, Mick, I'm a little late in responding...
My posting on Gauges vrs. FPS is here : http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?58268-A-note-on-Gauges-and-FPS
T
o disable UAC in Windows 7:
1.) Open the Control Panel
2.) Open the "System and Security" tab
3.) Click on "Change User Account Control settings" link under the "Action Center" tab
4). Move the slider down to "Never Notify Me"

It never outright says "Disable UAC" like it did in Vista, but moving the slider all the way down does the same thing. It is not running the UAC at low level - it isn't running at all, as a quick check of services and programs running will show.

Thank you!
:ernae:
Since I posted I learned about turning down UAC to Never Notify, but your post about gauges and FPS looks very interesting! I've made a copy to peruse tomorrow (It's late at night now) and to keep in my FS Help files.
