FS9 C-46 question

I've been taking a little break from other travails and cranked up the C-46 by Libardo Guzman and Tom Gibson for a little hop. This is an excellent aircraft and I highly recommend it if you don't already have it in your sim. I have only one gripe, and I know it's something I'm doing, but I can't pinpoint what.

I start the aircraft with the ground power cart hooked up, and engine startup goes without a hitch. My problem is I find it physically impossible to taxi this aircraft without the engines overheating with anything more than half a load of cargo or pax. What happens is the engines just pack up and stop during taxi despite my not getting any warnings re: CHT. I've even had this happen after takeoff and I can assure you I'm not abusing the engines. I tried to get around this by foregoing taxiing and just slewing the aircraft to the EOR, starting the engines there and immediately taking off, yet I still get the engines stopping, first one then the other. I am running about 38" MAP, 2400 RPM on takeoff, full rich mixture, within one min of breaking ground I will reduce RPM to about 2100, MAP to 34" and start a gentle climb, no more than 300 FPM to my first "staging" altitude, where I level out and gather a little speed before going up the step to the next desired altitude. Cowl flaps are open during this evolution. Again, I still get the engines to quit despite fuel pumps being on, tank selectors set properly, with the above engine settings. No engine overheat. Obviously this model has a failure mode in it, but I'd like to disable it. How does that happen?

Hi,

There were no failure modes placed into the original download (and thus original panel). If you have downloaded an addon panel that might have failure modes built in.

Have you checked that your generators are turned on?

That's what I was thinking Tom, but I've modified the panel on mine so much over the years that I wasn't sure if there were any or not anymore.

I use an add-on panel for the aircraft and my generators were on, so I'm inclined to think there is, as Tom says, a failure mode built into the panel .cfg.

I'm going back to the original panel but intend to keep the add-on that provides for a couple of large long-range tanks on the aircraft. The pop-up shows two fuel switches plus a gauge. I'll see how that works.

Perhaps you post a copy of your panel.cfg, so the problem can be pinpointed?

Do you use RealEngine by Gunther Teson1 or the failure vc uprgade by Detlev R. Rohmer?

Sorry for the delay. I'll check the different versions of the sim I've got on this machine, it should be in one of those, and I'll post.

Here's a copy of the panel.cfg in question:

No, I don't use any programmed failure options in my aircraft, at least to my knowledge; I'm careful in reviewing files to try to ensure I don't load or activate anything like that. Life's tough enough on the outside to willingly import problems to a hobby.

These sound like failure gauges to me?

gauge66=C46!EngineFire1, 207,631,20,20
gauge67=C46!EngineFire2, 233,631,20,20

And this may set up random failures?

gauge09=C46!Random_Switch, 122,24

//[window09]

//position=0

//ident=210

gauge00=BB_DC3_LR!fuel_gauge, 0,0,272,114

The gauge here does not seem to be deactivated with a //. Maybe interference from this LR tank modification causes the engines to quit, but dunno.

Paul's right. commenting out only the window header without commenting out the gauge effectively puts that gauge in the previous window. What you see:

[Window08]
file=Cowl_Control_BG.bmp
size_mm=231,126
position=7
visible=0
ident=182

gauge00=C46!cowl_flaps, 17,24

//[window09]
//BACKGROUND_COLOR=0,0,0
//size_mm=272,114
//position=0
//visible=0
//ident=210

gauge00=BB_DC3_LR!fuel_gauge, 0,0,272,114

What the Sim sees:

[Window08]
file=Cowl_Control_BG.bmp
size_mm=231,126
position=7
visible=0
ident=182

gauge00=C46!cowl_flaps, 17,24
gauge00=BB_DC3_LR!fuel_gauge, 0,0,272,114

But here's the catch, one of those two gauge00's should be ignored, but I'm not 100% certain which one. If the cowl flap gauge is there, then the fuel gauge is being ignored. To be safe, I'd add the "//" to the gauge line as well.

Gauges 66 and 67 referred to above are fire warning lights for the C-46's inst. panel. I tried commenting them out and just got the two red lights to disappear but no difference in performance. Gauge 09 was commented out and problems went away. Looks like that was the one. Thanks!!
