FS9 freezing with Jan's Sabre

After a few minutes of flying Jan's superb F-86, my fs9 "locks up" and freezes.
I have tried reloading the aircraft package twice, and all to no avail.
Any ideas ,gentlemen, where I might be going wrong.

can you be more specific?

when FS9 freezes, can you still shut it down using the task manager? Does it also freeze the rest of windows? are the graphics looking strange when frozen? What does task manager say? "program not responsive" or still running? If it's running, what is the CPU usage?

these answers will help to see if this is hardware or software related.

because most freezing comes from hardware, either a driver conflict or over-heating...but i need to know more details first

Thank you,Feng, for your reply.
I am unable to close down via task manager, and there is no distortion with the graphics or sound. Just a completely frozen screen. It occurs only with the F-86, and I am able to fly all the other aircraft without any problems. I have to close down by using "power off"".

Hmmm....could this be because of the textures being 32bit???
I have reworked all textures to DXT3 format, which gives me better framerates without
noticible loss of detail...

Works for me and took me a mere 15min, using DXTbmp, which is freeware.

bully707,
Thank you for the suggestion. I did notice a drop in the frame rates, together with a slight amount of "stutter",

thanks for the details.

it does sound like a hardware issue, maybe due to over-heating.

A complete hardware lock is usually always caused by a hardware issue. This bird might be asking too much of your video card/cpu.

Another cause (which is also sorta hardware related) is that it's causing a conflict w/ your sound driver. So here are some things you can try:

- first, load up the f86 and just let it sit there. Dont turn on the engines or move the camera. Leave it in spot view and see if it freezes up. If not, turn her on and let it sit. If not, take off and fly around. If it freezes during any of those stages, it'll help narrow down the problem.

and here are other things u can try:

- use a air compressor and blow out dust from your CPU/GPU fan
- run fs9 on a lower res (like 1024x768) and see if it still freezes (this will reduce the workload on the CPU/GPU
- alias the sound to another jet, and remove the sound files from the SF86 folder in the root fs9 sound folder
- like the above post, convert textures to DXT3 to reduce some load

Will endeavour to try out your suggestions tomorrow, feng, and will report back. I have even had the "sword " freeze on me even when selecting a flight!!
The skins also take a little while to paint in, which does not occur with other aircraft in my library.
Many thanks to both you and bully707 for your help.

Just a word of caution about the compressed air on the fan. I cleaned out my case a couple times with a can of air. Spinning the fan on the graphics card was fun and cleaned it well, but my fan became noisy and then failed.

After that - too late for me - i read that the fan bearings are not built for that kind of action. It is NOT recommended.

I still blow out my cases, but I never spin a fan.

Honestly that goes for all Bearings

You should never spin them with compressed air...

Although as a mechanic we always did :d

Anyway cleaning the dust out of your PC is a good idea and should be done twice a year more often if you find a large amount of build up when you do it.

On the average I clean my pc out once a month with canned air.... we've got cats. :costumes: I also use a Q-Tip to hold the fan I'm cleaning so it doesn't spin up.... that's 10 fans total. :isadizzy:

Gentlemen,
Many thanks for all your comments and suggestions.
Having taken Feng's and Bully707's advice and have had some success, although the frames rates are still very low , 10 -15fps but no stutters. The reduced setting of 1024x768 tends to make the Sabre look very compact and squashed, and detracts from it's natural beauty somewhat! As Feng said, it must be a problem with my sound card.
What I do find very odd, is that I am able to fly the MAAM B-25, TBM and the Capt. Sim 727 without any problems, even with everything maxed out and with Photorealistic scenery.
For the moment I shall return to Kirk's Sabre as a good second eleven.
Mant thanks to Jan and his team for producing such a splendid aircraft.

actually, i have problems with this Sabre as well. I get crazy FPS stutters when flying (jumps from 100fps down to 10). I have FS9 installed a very powerful machine (complete overkill for it actually, wasnt meant as a gaming machine), so it's definitely not because of low-end hardware. Also, all my other planes run ultra smooth, even system intensive ones such as the Aeroworx King Air B200 (i get about 65+ fps in the VC at 2560x1600 res).

i think this Sabre has a conflict w/ the gauge or sound files with certain types of hardware setup. I'll wait until their support forum goes up before trying to do anything. I have plenty of other planes to keep me flying :)

On my first and third flights in the Sabre my sim froze and I had to wait for the "Flight Sim has experienced a problem and needs to close" message.

I've flown it half a dozen times since without problems, but I don't switch views or pan around as much anymore. My machine is fairly low powered so I wasn't really surprized that I had some issues, I'm actually pretty pleased with how well it works. My frame-rates stay pretty reasonable and the VC gauges are super smooth, even more so than in a lot of less detailed airplanes.
