FS9 in Windows7 ???

Mick

A computer tech told a friend that because Windows 7 is so different from Windows XP and earlier Windows operating systems that installing older games can cause problems; even if they seem to install properly there can be trouble down the line. He used Flight Simulator as an example. This worries me because I see a new confuter in my future and I want to keep using FS9.

It seems to me that of there were issues with FS9 and W7 I would've read something about them by now, but I have to ask...

Is anyone who's running FS9 in Windows 7 having any kind of issues with it? Or with their computers after installing it?

And on the flip side, is anyone who's running FS9 in Windows 7 NOT having any trouble, especially if you're had it installed for a while now?

Thanks for any and all replies, positive and negative.

Just upgraded from XP to W-7 X64
FS9 works like a dream-I have had no problems over the past three weeks

I wish I could say I've had no problems, but...

Most of us have the multiple FS9 installs such as Golden Wings, Silver Wings, and Hawiian Wings from Bill Lyons, as well as installs for certain years/aircraft/scenery usage, after learning how from Bill Lyons. For the most part, they have been trouble free in Win 7, until lately. Suddenly, two of my installs keep recieving "failure to load" messages causing the "searching for fixes" messages. These always occur after the setup screens, when trying to load a flight. My main FS9 load still works, which has the largest amount of stuff in it, but my Silverwings and 1980's loads keep failing. Golden wings will do it intermittently. I have tried a new install on the same HDD, an external 1.5TB, but outside of the Programs (X86) folder. Even that one will not load, sometimes.
When one of them do load, they run great. I am in the process of trying each scenery folder, texture folder, aircraft, gauge and sound to find the problem source, but haven't figured it out, yet.

I've had Win 7 on my new homebuilt rig for almost, if not a year now, and the problems just started showing up a few months ago.

I have about 80+ games (i know, it's a lot, but it's for work) installed on a win 7 64bit Ultimate system. Never had a single issue with any of them; including FS9. They range from the latest games to stuff that dates back the early 1990s (such as Legend of Kyrandia and Fate of Atlantis).

Win 7 64 is probably the most stable windows i've ever used. In the last 7 month since i upgraded, it has only crashed once (and later found out it was caused by a third party software..so since then, never crashed). I skipped Vista btw.

The key to Win7 is to always login/run as an administrator and disable UAC asap. Also disable all the useless services.

Have to admit that I am following this thread with interest, as this is an upgrade I am seriously considering.

Windows 7 seems to be my inevitable step forwards, if only because the improved memory management means I would no longer have the 4 GB RAM limitation of 'legacy' Windows, which can only improve performance in many games & applications - still not getting FS X though!! :icon_lol:

The only very very minor quirk I have seen with W7 64bit is the way new scenery files are added into the library. It requires a second click ( might be a right click ) into the blank space of the selection window to accept the new folder.

That's it.

Everything else I have payware and freeware works nice and stable and unless I mess things up without any issues. Of course if you place for example conflicting files into the Sim...bgls of AF2 files are the most common culprits that crash your FS9 sim in XP they will still do that in W7.

Thanks for all the replies!

I feel a lot better now about getting a W7 confuter!

Not that it will happen real soon, but eventually it must.

Hey Mick

I've been running fs9 and fsx on Win 7 pro 64bit for about a year and have had no problems what so ever. Some of my other games will not run on it but win 7 has XP mode and so I install it into that and run them that way.

RUNNING FS9 IN WINDOWS 7 - 32 BIT

Mick,
I have very little left to add to the extremely positive reports on running FS9 on Windows 7. My motherboard and graphics card went both went u/s last month and I took the opportunity to upgrade from Vista to 7 and get a new card.
FS9 runs fine, the only problem I had was locating the FS9.cfg file. When I upgraded and kept my personal files, Win 7 created a folder called 'Windows Old' and it was deep in there. I had to make it reveal all 'hidden' files first.
I think this is the FS9.cfg that I am now running on . . . . . but not absolutely sure.
Anyone out there know where Windows 7 would put the FS9.cfg if I was starting from scratch, ie a fresh install of FS9?
Also how do I get access to all of my Win 7 files. Some still deny me access! Most frustrating.

Rgds Mal

This is where Windows 7 Ultimate/64 stuffed my config file:

C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FS9\FS9.cfg

Just an update on my only problem.
It seems something has gone haywire in my Ultimate Terrain when used in multiple installs. Works great in the original, but linking to it in the multiples dorsn't work, in my install. They did work in Win XP. When I turned off the Ultimate Terrain in the scenery libraries, the other installs worked fine.
