FS9 problems

I've been having issues with FS9 crashing at random times, sometimes before the flight (usually when I go into the flight planner), sometimes during the flight. Really starting to tick me off because I usually fly in real time, and I hate having the sim die when I'm on final after a 90 minute flight!! Anybody seen this kinda thing before? Got any advice?

Thanks in advance...

I would try a defrag to start with. See if that helps.

I've been having the same thing, crashing when I try to change from the default flight to different a/c or airfield before flying. It hasn't happened in FSGW3, but I'll try a defrag and see what happens.

...Anybody seen this kinda thing before?

All the time!

The only thing I can pin down is that it's more likely to happen in places where I have a lot of complex add-on scenery, and in places where there's a lot of AI traffic. I suspect it's a case of FS needing more processing power or graphics power than the computer has to offer, so it just dies.

Anyway, I haven't heard any better explanations.

Haven't heard any solutions either, other than to turn down AI density and/or fly in places without a lot of add-on scenery, which kind of defeats the purpose of setting up a lot of AI traffic and installing a lot of add-on scenery...

I'm gonna try to clean/defrag my system and then turn down some of my settings (I've got alot that are set to custom). We'll see if that helps. Thanks guys!

The other thing is to turn off as many background processes that are running while you are flying. Since I started running "msconfig", then choosing "selective startup" and shutting down stuff I don't need, I've gained a whole lot of processing power. The point is, soem of those background apps and processes would fire up and cause the sim to crash.
I still have one that's driving me nuts..it's called "weather bug" and altho I shut it down before firing up the sim the damn thing still comes up at the worst possible time and I get a ctd. I really don't want to uninstall it cuz it's useful at times to check weather reports so for now, I live with it.The other thing I do is by using "Task Manager" I assign High Priority to FS9.Lately I've been having a lot of fun with it after years of messing with it. The Track IR really helps the immersion factor....I'll mess with it for six months or so then get bored and fire up the combat sims again......and so it goes!

I had the similar problem a while back..eventually dscovered I hadn't installed the FS9 update in a reinstall of FS9..do you have a GPS open when it crashes?

Ive actually had this happen several times in the past several days. I recently purchased GEP and that fantastic clouds program, FTX or something.

You can always rename your FS install, then install a clean FS9 installation, then transfer all the bits over to it from the original FS folder. But it may not help.

If this is happening in one area, an area you fly in and out of alot, then you may have a double AFCAD somewhere for the same airport. This will cause a CTD.

I forgot all about the 9.1 update! I'll install that too. Thanks for the idea about AFCAD's Lionheart - I'll check that out too

Well, I've done so many things that I'm not sure what has helped the most, but I think that installing the update and disabling the identity protector in my anti-virus (second biggest memory user on my system) probably helped alot. Frame-rates are back up in the 30-40 range, and no "hiccups" on my last flight. Thanks all for your help and ideas!
