FS9 product key

I'm re-installing FS9, but I may have lost the product key. There is a number on the back of the CD set in the format X##-#####. It's been such a long time since I've installed FS9 that I don't remember if that's the key, or if it has the more familiar (these days) 25 character key. Anyone remember? I'll try it and see in a bit, but just curious if anyone here can refresh my memory before I do.

FS9 does not need a serial/activation like FSX. Only thing is that FS9 out of the box needs the CDROM to play but there is a workaround for that: The no CD patch can be found here:

Make sure you apply the FS9 v9.1 patch first.

Problem with the no-CD patch is that it causes some installers to glitch (A2A/Shockwave for example), which is why I never use it.

Thanks hschuit. A bit of Googling confirmed this for me as well. I removed the link you posted for the "no cd patch" as it's our policy here not to publicize that. It's ok though, I already have it...

Paul, I've never had to use a product code when installing FS9. Just pop in Disc 1 and follow the instructions.

Edit: I see you've already got it under control :icon29:

I'm sorry but I don't understand what's wrong with legal owners of a software product using a no-cd patch. That was the first mod I got after purchasing FS9. I absolutely hate that form of copy protection and don't buy any game that requires it and there's no patch available.

This discussion has a long history here. Basically, since Microsoft considers the use of that file to "hacking" or "cracking" their product, we have placed it, more or less, in the same category as other form of piracy, and will not condone it or promote it. I use it, for the same reason as you. It's easy enough to find with a couple of minutes on Google...

It goes back to the beginnings of SOH when we were still Combat Flight Center. We had a tight relationship with the Microsoft Aces team and were asked to not promote the no cd cracks for the reasons that PRB stated.

More than that, the crack allows for true piracy, since the entire package can be installed without having to own the disk set. Back in 2004-5, I remember seeing requests for the file by users that had bitstreamed the entire FS9 package. And yes, I also have the file. But I also have my original CD's, along with a burned copy of the FS9.1 Update installer tucked neatly away in my original tin-can package.

I also remember a time when the No-CD patch (I prefer the term patch to crack) was promoted on the Mickey$oft support pages of both FS9 and CFS3 as a good way to improve frame rates and overall performance of the game!

EDIT: and since PRB legally bought the disks, I don't see any piracy in him using the patch to keep the precious DVD's (or were they CD's?) safe and functioning.

The best thing that FSX did, was getting rid of having to put the blasted CD/DVD into the rig to be able to play. Since support from Mickey$oft for both FS9 and FSX is non existent now, I made mine into iso files and install them with Daemon Tools.

IMHO a legal buyer should not have to answer to anyone about how he or she uses the games in question. In buying the games, he or she obtained the right to play them. Full stop.

Moreover, I don't think there are many SOH members who condone piracy.

Fighting piracy is a good thing, a worthy cause even. Shooting yourself in the foot doing so is folly...
