FSUIPC security breach

Please read my post in the FSX Forum.

There was a post from Ian P on this forum also the the fsx and prep3d earlier today, but this seems too have vanished on all three forums ? I wish I knew what is happening.
EDIT: it seems that the origional post in the fsx forums has had a sticky and still shows, however I would like too ask that if it effects fs2004 why has the post been removed and people being told too go to an FSX forums to read about it seems completely bizzare and illogical. I'm not having a dig at aussieman just trying to figure the logic of this. Surely if it effects us here on the 2004 forums it should have been stuck at the top of this page, not only on the fsx forums.

I moved the original thread from here out of public view after I got a PM from a user that got a virus. After speaking with others that have updated with no issue, I'm now inclined to think it was a false positive. It's still strange to me since my unregistered 3.8.x version is still working just fine.

I'll move the original thread back into view...

As is my 3.8 version as well. I just flew the gauntlet in a plane that requires FSUIPC at 02:45 MDT and all worked just fine. I also went into the modules folder and checked out the logfile for FSUIPC, and it appears that it is reading everything and working properly.

Norton Anti Virus (ONLY Norton Anti Virus - even McAfee AV, also from Symantec, isn't doing it) is reporting the installer for 3.999z2 has a "heuristic threat" - in other words, not a real problem, just something that the code thinks map possibly be a problem, so blocks it on principle. It's been reported a few times and, if you have a working installation already, Pete has posted a dll only download over at his support forums at simFlight for NAV users to download.

BB686: It will not stop working until GlobalSign revoke the license AND your PC updates its list to show the certificate as invalid, which is usually done every few days. It could, however, happen within a few hours of the request to revoke the license, hence telling people that updating sooner rather than later is the best idea.

I think I read somewhere that things were going to be addressed with GlobalSign... maybe Pete, or other flight simmers... or whoever feels that the whole bit about the security breach might be salvageable. At this point, probably not, since Pete has gone to all the extent of re-creating both FSUIPC packages for FS9 and FSX without the cert from GlobalSign. I'll head over to the support forum at simFlight to see what's what.

Having spent 35 years in the I/T Industry and having been everything from a programmer, to a network admin, then a systems admin, I have learned to take NOTHING for chance. I use Norton Internet Securities and when I tried to run the installer for version 3.999x, the AV quarantined the whole executable.... not just part of it, citing "suspicious activity" or "malware". Sounded convincing enough for me.

At any rate, I hope I can get the update and install it, without too much trouble..... BTW Ian... thanks for your input. Much appreciated.

I had the same AV detection problem when I downloaded the installer linked to in the personal email I received, but the one at the "normal" site proved no problems.

Which "normal" site are you speaking of? Can you provide a link?

I did get a notice on my e-mail since I have a registered version. Do I just go to the referenced site, D/L and install without my key? I cannot find the key from last year. I am a novice user of FSUIPC.

It should not get that notice until you run Windows updates.

I always hated when he went to the installer version of FSUIPC. A simple .dll download is better.

If your key is kept in the folder with your FSUIPC, it will use it. If not, the installer will check for the default save point, and/or the registry key. If it can't find it, you can ask the installer to check for it online, at simflight.

I always keep a copy of my key in the modules folder, as well as where I save my payware downloads, along with copies of the purchase emails and key notices for every payware item I have. I keep them in at least three different locations on three different harddrives. Just suggestions..

And that would be here: http://forum.simflight.com/topic/66139-updated-modules/
I just replaced my 3.8.9.0 with this new one and did a quick test by starting up AFCAD while I was parked at KGSO. The red cross-hair appeared in AFCAD as expected.

Unless I'm sadly mistaken, he's referring to Pete's homepage: http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html
