FSUIPC update necessary?

Hello All!

I have Just Flight's F-117 Stealth Fighter CD and their website says I may have to install an update to the FSUIPC before installing the plane, if I've already updated FS2004 with the 9.1 patch.

Here's their blurb: http://www.justflight.com/faqs.asp?drdProduct=48

I'm assuming you've heard of this FSUIPC update?

And it looks like Just Flight uses an automatic installer, too. I'd like to manually install the plane.

Hmmm....

FSUIPC is a module developed by Peter Dowson; absolutely nothing to do with FS9.1 update and won't affect anything.

Its' used as an interface (amongst other things) to allow gauge files to access some of the inner workings
of Fs and display relevant data; can also tweek your weather and joystick setting too;
comes in 2 variants; free; and payware or unlocked. You download the free one, and simply drop it into the
fs2004/modules folder; if you want the additional features; pay the licence fee and an unlock code will be
sent which you enter in relevant 'box'

Peter Dowson allows some software publishers to 'key' their own product so that it will work
with the free version, using features as if you have paid for the licence; that it is why you need to install latest; to make sure
that it can recognise a valid key, otherwise some of the gauges won't work or display properly.

The latest version is 3.99 for Fs2004; download from here: http://www.schiratti.com/dowson.html

Hope this helps

Thanks, Pete! This does help.

I see a 'FSUI.DLL' module already there inside Flight Simulator 9/Modules. It doesn't have the 'PC' in the title, however. I'm assuming this is the same module that will be replaced by Dawson's version or sit alongside it?

No, won't be replaced, Peter Dowson's module is an add-on to standard FS9
in fact, so many add-on publishers make use of its' features, you could call it a 'must have' file if you don't already have it.
Once you download, unzip/extract (whatever) all of the zip file contents to your Flight Simulator /Modules folder; won't harm anything.
IIRC there's an .ini file and a couple of others that FSUIPC needs to work with contained within zip, as well as a user guide for advanced users.

As you can tell I've had a version installed for sooo looong now I've not looked into .zip file recently :) ; it was originally a utility for Fs98,
then 2000,2002 and now Fs9 and FSX too.

Once you start Fs, the FSUIPC module (program) runs automatically with those items that need to interface with it;
but to see what features it has available to tweek, in the bar across top of screen (in windowed' mode) will be a Modules tab,
click on 'FSUIPC' and the program interface will come up in a sub-window. It will 'tell' you what features are available in free, or you have to pay to unlock (worth it BTW!)

Best money I ever spent on any FS product ............ bar none. The capabilities of FSUIPC are vast and if you like technical stuff the pdf files included give you a great many things to ponder.
If nothing else using FSUIPC as the controller calibration and assignment interface vs the MS built in one is worth the price of admission in my opinion.

And while I love Freeware as much as the next guy, so many things that we all love and enjoy in FS would not have been possible without Pete's program, so for that alone he should get paid handsomely :icon29::icon29::icon29:

Hmmm....

The only thing I would add is just get the latest version of FSUIPC and install it.

To answer your last question you normally should be able to manually install the aircraft.

I have a folder on my c drive called FS_Temp. What I do is add another folder to that folder and name it the name of the aircraft or addon I am installing. I install to that folder provided the installer will let me (most will).

The installation program will install all the files to this location. You can then copy them out of that folder and place them into the proper location.

Keep in mind the installer thinks this is your root FS9 folder. Any folders it creates in that folder go into the folder in the root FS9 folder of the same name.

When would you not be able to install to a temporary folder. Some installers read your registry entry for FS9 and if the path you are installing to does not match that path they will stop the installation.

At which point you get the flight1 utility to "fix the registry" free from their support website and place a copy of the fs9.exe into the temp folder you made earlier and then run the F1 utility pointing to the temp folder.
Install and copy as described above and then run the F1 utility again and point back to the original Fs9.exe location .............job done.

Some installers do not even look at the registry but simply look for fs9.exe in the folder you are pointing them to....in that case you can skip the step with the F1 utility :wavey:

Cheers
Stefan
