Hi
I have been a huge flight sim fan for many years, but since the arrival of FSX, I have done very little simming. Although I had upgraded my pc at the time, I found the typical frame rate too low.
Anyway, I recently had an operation that is temporarily restricting my activities, so I am spending hours on the pc as a way of passing time. I started back with FS9 and FSX. FS9 stills runs great but FSX remained slow. So I thought that I would do a small upgrade of my graphics card - didn't want to spend too much (my pc is four years old) and my pc spec limited the options.
So to the point of this post - I changed my 256kb NVidea 7900GS for a (fairly mid range) 1GB NVidea GT240. What a difference! I can finally run FSX with mid/high sliders at an OK frame rate (set at 23). I can have air traffic at my favourite airports! Birds fly across the runway and I have ground traffic! I also followed some of the tuning tips on this site eg re bufferpool. Interestingly, my frame rate for FS9 has actually dropped. But it still runs fine.
FYI my PC is a Dell Dimension 9200 dual core 2 6700 2.66GHz, with 4 GB of memory running Windows 7. Dell monitor set at 1600 by 1200 (AA and trilinear set in FSX)
It just shows how even a small change can make a worthwhile difference!
