FSX finally works!

paulb

Still here!
Hi

I have been a huge flight sim fan for many years, but since the arrival of FSX, I have done very little simming. Although I had upgraded my pc at the time, I found the typical frame rate too low.

Anyway, I recently had an operation that is temporarily restricting my activities, so I am spending hours on the pc as a way of passing time. I started back with FS9 and FSX. FS9 stills runs great but FSX remained slow. So I thought that I would do a small upgrade of my graphics card - didn't want to spend too much (my pc is four years old) and my pc spec limited the options.

So to the point of this post - I changed my 256kb NVidea 7900GS for a (fairly mid range) 1GB NVidea GT240. What a difference! I can finally run FSX with mid/high sliders at an OK frame rate (set at 23). I can have air traffic at my favourite airports! Birds fly across the runway and I have ground traffic! I also followed some of the tuning tips on this site eg re bufferpool. Interestingly, my frame rate for FS9 has actually dropped. But it still runs fine.

FYI my PC is a Dell Dimension 9200 dual core 2 6700 2.66GHz, with 4 GB of memory running Windows 7. Dell monitor set at 1600 by 1200 (AA and trilinear set in FSX)

It just shows how even a small change can make a worthwhile difference!

Great when you get it going, isn't it ? I upgraded my system last year ( Socket i7 960 3.2Ghz, 6Gb Corsair, Velociraptor drive for FSX and a GTX 285 ). Scenery like VFR London and FlyTampa's Hong Kong & Kai Tak are breathtaking, smooth as silk.

Enjoy !

It's great to hear you got it up and running to your liking.Post some shot of your new system so we can drool :ernae:

Thanks guys! I wont post any screen shots yet - 1 am too busy playing with my system and adding aircraft etc!!

Currently FSX is very stable. BTW, I am using the NVidea 197.45 drivers if anyones interested. I updated to them (for my old card and have kept them for the new card) when I moved to Windows 7 a few months ago and both FS9 and FSX work well with them.

One question please?

On checking I am using FSX with SP1. Should I add SP2 and or buy acceleration? I dont fly online, and mainly use GA aircraft and warbirds. Might SP2 or Acceleration adversely impact on my stability or frame rates? Any thoughts?

TIA

Great to have you with us mate! I wish you the very best for being here and in your recovery!:salute: And if your in the UK it's actually nearly 6am not 1am lol maybe your clock needs reset also haha!

I honestly can't give you any advice on this, because I've been running FSX + Acceleration from day one, and so have nothing to compare it to. As far as I know, Acceleration adds both SP1 and SP2 to the stock installation of FSX.

Thanks for the replies. In the end, for now at least, I have added SP1 and SP2. Everything seems OK so far!
