FSX installation help please

Hi folks,

Trying to install X in my new PC and have run into a brick wall. The disks work (FSX Boxed Gold): but the auto play function in Win 10 does not. I have installed 3 different dvd drives and none will auto play. I can install disk 1 by manually executing the setup file but when I need to run Disk 2 it will not run. Both disks are recognized and I can copy content from both disks onto a thumb drive and even install disk 1 one from the thumb drive but here I can not get disk 2 to initialize and run from the t-drive. I’ve tried a dozen different “fixes“ from the internet up to and including adding a registry entry which does work for music cds but not for data or dvds.

i would appreciate any suggestions that I haven’t already tried and please don’t be offended if I let you know that have already tried your suggestion. I really have tried a lot of different fixes all to no avail.

Desperate to get my FSX back. I need a”fix”. :banghead:

Hi Duckie,
I just spent yesterday doing the same thing using FSX Gold. It just hangs there loading - and you are correct, it does not just auto install. I had to double click the exe file.
I read a couple of posts on line, and just let it run and walked away. After a couple hours, i came back and (jiggled the mouse to wake the CP up) and it had then asked me for disc 2. Progress made! Put in disc 2, walked away for another period - and voila! All seemed good.
Then i ran the sim, and it was pretty ugly in its nakedness (no installs), but expected that. What i didnt expect was to not be able to uncheck the hide menu bar when in fullscreen mode. I tried a number of different suggestions found on the web (none of which worked), but then came across one additional suggestion - download and install SP1.
That worked.
Now it is time to install acceleration. Will let you know if i run into any hangups there.

Bottom Line for me was to be patient and walk away. Not sure why that is, but i had read that in quite a few posts elsewhere.
Good luck.

Hey Deke, I did everything but walk away! I’ll try that in a little while. Thanks.

Hi Steve,
you may have already tried this but since it isn’t clear from the thread I thought I’d throw it out in case you hadn’t.

I am not sure where I got this (FSDeveloper maybe?), and perhaps you have already tried this but I have installed FSX Acceleration twice now in new machines with Win 10 with no issues after making the following change to the Win 10 Registry:

Go into the registry editor @ HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\CLASS\{4D36e967-e325_11CE-bfc1-08002be10318}
Open this folder and double click on “UpperFilters” and ensure that the value is “PartMgr” with caps lower case. The default is all lower case which seems to be the hang-up.
After saving that change FSX and Acceleration installed perfectly for me. It appears that it reverts to all lower case after the install and a reboot, but MS FSX runs fine after you have gotten past the install.

WE ARE IN BUSINESS!

DEKE GETS THE PRIZE!

I went and did what Deke said he did. I installed disk one which only took a few minutes and then inserted disk 2 and walked away! Took a look about an hour and 15 in and what do you know!! No problem with activation and Accel installed without a hitch.

But man is it ugly! Now the real work begins.

Priller - Bitdefender Internet Security. I also disabled it while I was trying all those suggestions last night.

Wellis - Thanks for the suggestion but seems its moot now.

Thank you to each and every one of you who took the time to reply with a suggestion. You are what makes this place rock!

More help requested, please. Does anyone have a handle on symlinks/junctions in Windows 10? I want to move my scenery files out of the sim. Including Orbx I have about 110gb of it (103 is Orbx). I’ve tried several times using the instructions in the tips section here and a couple online. Although they are all very similar there are some subtle differences. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to get any to work for me. I’m trying to move them from MY FSX SSD to another SSD.

THANKS

Steve

Duckie, a long time ago I moved all my scenery out of the Sim and onto a different drive (I have no SSD's just HDD's) so maybe there's more to your request than I'm reading in your post. Orbx is the only one I've never messed with so I don't know if it "must" be installed only to the Sim or if it can also be moved out to a separate drive. Anyway, I have everything aside from Orbx out of the Sim with no problems.

Duckie,

Sent you a pm that includes info from Nick Cooper at Orbx forum on how to set up a "symbolic link" that allows you to put their scenery somewhere other than in the main Orbx folder. It has worked well for me with both Orbx scenery as well as others. Thus I have my Orbx stuff on a larger drive and not eating up space on the SSD where the OS and sim(s) are. Used it for FSX as well as P3D.
