FSX still to be activated?

I don't think it will run if its not activated...
It'll always need activating. That's the way MS security works to avoid the need for disk in drive, as so many people demanded.
It will run, but only in "demo mode" for a limited period of time (15 mins? Can't remember.)
So yes, Gold needs activating. There is no version of FSX that does not need activating - although I have yet to hear of anyone having an activation rejected who was not immediately able to reactivate it using the freephone telephone number, so it's not like Mass Effect, Spore or one of the similar titles that have said "three activations and that's it, you can never activate it again without buying a new code".

I just bought gold recently, and activated it with no problem. It took like five seconds to do. In fact, I've activated my earlier version many, many times without problems. Once I had to call MS in Bangalore to get it set up again, but even that was quick and painless. It's definitely not a reason to not buy it.
It can be activated countless times on two different hardware setups. After that if you upgrade your computer with different hardware you have to ask microsoft to reset your activations... and you have to ask them nicely
.I'm on my... <thinks>... Fifth? Possibly sixth different hardware configuration. I have had to phone Microsoft to get software activated twice in my life. The first was Office 2007, which was a technical glitch that was resolved by a highly entertaining conference call(*) between technical, customer disservice and myself, the second was Windows 7 64 following my last set of hardware shenanigans (long story).
I have never, in numerous reinstalls and reactivations of FSX and Accel, had to phone MS to reactivate it. I'm well into double figures on that now.
(* Edited to add: Entertaining in the way that leaves you with the phone on mute trying not to bang your head off your desk while you laugh. It was resolved, though.)

AS I understand things, MS keep a list of the activations for about 6 months then it is refreshed on a rolling basis. Furthermore they allow at least a couple of activations within each 6 month timeframe. So if you reinstall outside of those limitations you should never need to resort to a phone call. I have only once had to call MS and it has not been a particularly difficult process.
Equally it can be a bit of a pot-luck situation.
No reason though not to get the Gold edition.

Everyone has said how simple it is, and how flexible MS is with re-activations. Everyone has their own opinion, and mine is you'll be missing out. Good luck.

Seriously? You don't buy a game if it has to be activated? If that's the case. . .you're right, you don't need FSX
I wish FS9 required activation rather than having to have the disc in the drive. One of these days, my disk is going to wear out, get broken, scratched too badly to work...and FS9 will be dead in the water...unless I go out and buy another package. Same with CFS2. Both of these sims are getting harder and harder to find...sure there's a guy on Amazon selling unopened boxes of CFS2 for close to $100, but there's no way in 7 shades of Hades that I will spend that kind of money for a 10 year old program.

Presumably these kids never play first person shooters online either (because every one I now know locks the key to the user account - one use only), never play MMOGs, which lock a key to your account, never use STEAM or any other online distributions system, which locks your key to your account...

I think the publishers issued a tool for revoking your activation once you uninstalled the game, so you were just limited in the number of PCs you could install it on.
Yeah, at one point it was one time too many, so I killed the need for activation.
I own an original copy and can prove it, in case MS gets doubts.
Buy it, activate it once, done. If you don't screw around with FSX's files much, you'll likely get by with one activation and that's it.

I mean, hacking in the code and doing the internet activation isn't the problem, calling the hotline once you've used up all your internet activations and fiddling with all those numbers is!
And believe me, there were times when I easily was at that point.
Ever since making my FSX "portable" I didn't have to run the original installer a single time and go through that lengthy, annoying installation process.
