fx_gasfire_l

In my effects.xml file I have two different entries for fx_gasfire_l :

<fx_gasfire_l ClassName="GroupEffect" Effect0="gasfire_l_expl"/>
or
<fx_gasfire_l ClassName="GroupEffect" Effect0="fx_airexpl_l_static" Effect1="fx_fireball_l" Effect2="Shockwave_as_char_building_l_1" Effect3="Shockwave_as_char_building_l_2" Effect4="G_Explosion_L_rising3x_delay" Effect5="G_smoke_drifting3"/>

Which one should be kept? Should I rename the other one differently?

Gosd..

G'day mate,the choice is entirely yours..at face value the second of the two entries would appear to have a bunch more effects combined together to produce one large,detailed effect..and the first possibly the stock effect (correct me if i'm wrong..)..one way of finding out is to swap each one out of your effects file and take a screenshot,then decide which you like best..from memory I think the game tends to read the first one it comes across when reading the file (definitely correct me if i'm wrong!..).. I have to do the same when testing effects I've made/modified for my ships,and it is a tedious (if still fun process..)..happy new year!,hope this was helpful..

cheers!,Jason..

Quite a few duplicates in stock effects.xml

....which reminds me that when I put the stock effexts.xml into alphabetical order, I found a whole bunch of duplicates. If I can find the totally stock file with duplicates removed, I will upload it. IIRC, like Liquidchicken I went by complexity as a rule of thumb as to which of the duplicate entries I preferred. However I think there are one or two where the listed effects cannot be found so everything needed to be checked. :wavey:

Going through the file, seeing all the draft and seemingly unfinished entries, you get the impression of the unseemly haste with which CFS3 was finally brought to market.
