Game controllers mapping problem

I’m getting frustrated with something that should be easy to do…but apparently isn’t for me! :banghead:

Admittedly, I’ve never used CFS 3 until recently for OFF and I had stopped flight simming for a couple of years, so maybe I’m really forgetting a lot, but I can’t remap my joystick. I’ve read and re-read the “Game Controls” in “Help” for CFS 3 where it explains how to change joystick assignments. I can get everything to appear just as they explain in the steps except that I never get the separate list of joystick assignments, just the default keyboard assignments. All the selected controls show up in the list, as well as the modes and the device being programmed. In CFS 2 the joystick and rudder pedals would show up in the assignment columns as each device was selected, but in CFS 3…nothing! Even the rudder pedals don’t show up with the axis assignments as they do in CFS 2, yet all the basic functions work on both peripherals.

I keep looking for some error that I’m making… What am I doing wrong? I'm starting to wonder if I need to remove and reinstall the devices and/or CFS 3.

Please and thanks for any ideas!

Start OFF in quick combat then hit the Escape key to get to the drop down menu, then click Controls to see if your stick is listed

The entire thread should be right up your alley, pay particular mind to #7

Over50...yes, the devices are listed as Saitek Cyborg EVO FFB and CH ProPedals.

gimpyguy...thanks for that link. I missed that one in my searches. I just had a quick look at it and it appears that I'm doing everything right but I'll go back and read it all carefully to see if I can spot a problem with my method.

Just a note to help clarify...for example, I want to remove the rudder action from the joystick and leave it on the pedals only, but I never get a choice of removing it from the joystick. Even though I have the "joystick" selected and the "control surfaces" (or whatever) selected, I can only add, change, delete the keyboard assignments in the category "mine" (or new category "OFF"). (It also tells me that I'm not allowed to change the defaults in the "CFS 3" category.)

So, the joystick and pedal axis and other joystick buttons never are listed in the "assignments" column as they were in CFS 2, although I don't know if CFS 3 uses the same mapping process. They look very similar.

I'll check out that thread and report back, Captain!

Try this, JIMKO (although I don't have pedals yet and don't know, if it works.)

Go to "controlls", choose the "rudder"-assignment, double-click it. Now an extra new choice line should open.
Now, move your rudder/pedals - perhaps it will get acknowledged.
After that, delete the other, old assignment.

Hi Olham54,

I tried your suggestion yesterday when I was trying to make this work but no go. I can delete the old rudder/keyboard assignments but moving the rudder pedals doesn't do a thing and neither does twisting the joystick in the "add" new assignment window.

Yet both devices function and will operate the rudder in the aircraft.

And, nowhere do I have an option of disabling the joystick 'twist' axis for rudder the because that joystick function doesn't show up in the CFS 3 game control assignments, although the joystick is in the drop-down list of devices.

Back to the puzzle...

I'm using CH Pro Pedals and I didn't go through any gyrations whatsoever to get them recognized and operational. All I did was turn off auto rudder in the workshop. I assume your pedals are USB?

If both the stick and pedals are listed I don't understand why the various keyboard functions aren't being shown when you select the joystick to remap the keyboard functions to the stick buttons.

Just a thought...I remember reading that before installing OFF you should start a mission (quick combat, whatever) in CFS3 and then save it first (which I did). If you didn't maybe this is why nothing is being listed..??

Edit: Just took note of your comment "(It also tells me that I'm not allowed to change the defaults in the "CFS 3" category.)". You're going to see this if you're trying to remap the buttons via CFS3 vs the OFF drop down Controls menu (I know 'cause I made the same mistake trying to set up the game the first time.)

You didn't perchance install the disc that came with the pedals, did ya ?? Cause that will screw up everything. While you're at it, the programing that came with the Saitek, is pure Garbage. All your work will be done in controls

Highlight Rudder and Delete assignment, that's it nothing more.

The Pedals now control the rudder PERIOD

"Mine" is the file that stores you command settings, so that is the one to edit and save. It allows you to assign your joystick buttons for example. I don't think the stick axiis (x,y, and twist) are changeable there though.

As the guys said, usually you just plug in the rudder pedals and they work. Then all that needs to be done is to disable the twist-stick.

Jimko, you'll probably get this sorted OK, but if you think I can help, I live only a short distance away from you (I am in Nanoose Bay).

Ok, gentlemen...

From your various messages, I think I'm getting a grip on this creature. I am also embarrassed to admit that I am suffering from "CFS 2 pre-programmed notions"...

First...as I stated earlier, the pedals and joystick do work and always have. This was not a problem.

Second...I thought that like CFS 2, the axis for joystick and pedal functions would show up in "control" assignments but from what you've said that's not true. The rudder axis for the joystick has to be disabled in "Workshops" as Over50 pointed out. The pedals show up on the "Controls" drop down list but not in the assignments list. The rudder axis can be deleted from only the keyboard assignments in this list.

Third...I should have ignored the axis issue for now and gone ahead with mapping joystick buttons which I finally did. Now I see that they just remap in the keyboard column, not in a different column as I think they did in CFS 2.

All this accomplished in bits and pieces while managing life's other duty calls...:isadizzy:

I'll have to finish getting this sorted out tomorrow.

Over50...thanks for the Workshop rudder tip!
gimpy...thanks for the help and the link to the VERY useful thread for mapping ideas!
77Scout...Hey, you really are a neighbour! Thanks for the comments which helped clarify for me how this CFS 3 mapping works!

Thanks very much for all the help, guys!
I think that one of my past performance evaluations stated that I "have trouble identifying tall buildings!"

If your using CH products

CFS3 (OFF 3) does not recognize more than one controller. Fortunately, the Control Manager allows you to combine all your devices into one controller and so you can use all your buttons and all your controllers. I have Fighterstick, Pro Pedals and Pro Throttle and I've made a profile that utilizes all three. I also have TrackIR, so I haven't programmed many views... some, but all external plus padlock.
Bonz... :ernae:

P.S. I have an old profile... very usable... at CH Hangar you can download.

Thanks for the link, Bonz!

Apparently you are right in that CFS 3 does not seem to recognize more than one contoller in the assignments list although it does acknowledge that there is more than one controller in the device drop-down menu. And as you also stated, a profile that combines all devices has to be created.

At first I had trouble getting my head around this as I kept assuming it was similar to the CFS 2 controller configuration...the danger of pre-conceived notions!
