Gardening and Fishing...or things are feeling a bit more normal around here

Gardening and Fishing...or things are feeling a bit more normal around here

As many of you know, my dear wife Debra had a major brain surgery nearly 2 years ago, followed by months of residential rehab, followed by months of out patient rehab...until the insurance went bye bye and that ended the rehab. Well, this spring things are looking more like their normalish selves.

We have been taking the dogs for evening drives.....going no where in particular, just out driving and seeing the countryside and letting the dogs smell foreign air.

The patio is once again covered with lots and lots of plants, everything from petunias and begonias to tomato and pepper plants. Plus, we are putting out a veggie garden this year....right now it is planted with 13 tomato plants (17 total when counting the 4 in large pots on the patio) and will hopefully be adding cucumber, cabbage, radish, leaf lettuce and some birdhouse gourds. Deb, due to her balance issues, can not work in the large flower garden or the veggie garden, so we have set her up with the patio garden...that way she can do her gardening without fear of falling...other the the fear of her falling off the patio...which is 10 feet up off the ground (it has a good strong railing all around it).

And we have gone fishing the last two evenings. Nothing major, just across the meadow to the landlord's large pond. It's easy to get to, doesn't cost a thing to fish there other than the cost of a couple dozen meal worms. Yesterday, I caught 4 and Deb caught 3....Blue Gill and Sunfish. I loved hearing Deb get all excited when she caught each of her fish..."I got one! I got one!" This evening Deb didn't fish much, she said she was having fun watching me FISH...real Bass fishing this evening for me. I had my nice 5 foot light action spinning rod, rigged up a 4-inch curl tail plastic worm (translucent blue with metal flake throughout) Texas style. I caught 7 Large Mouth Bass and one decent Blue Gill. The largest Bass was about a foot...nothing to right home about, but they sure felt good on that light action rod. The fish are pretty much in the midst of nesting and egg laying, so it seems that the large Bass or busy creating the next generation of fish.

Deb has been spending time out on the patio each day....actually several times a day....and she has a tan for the first time in 2 years. I can see her freckles again LOL!

All this fun and it is just a little over half way through spring....summer is a month away...and we are looking forward to it. We will be getting our fishing licenses and heading to the local lakes, out on Deb's sister's pontoon boat, and possibly even renting a boat from the marina a couple times a month just so we can putter around the lake and fish.

Tim, you're a good guy and I wish you and Deb all the best. May you have a long life together. :)

Nice "feel good" post Tim! Thank you for sharing a little bit of your life with us. In the midst of all the daily hustle & bustle, isn't nice to get some normalcy back?

I'm happy Deb is getting "back to normal". It must be such a nice feeling for her and a relief for you! (as in Deb is on the road to recovery).

Sounds like you guys had fun fishing! When I was a little girl, that's something I used to do with my Dad. Being that he was a Forest Ranger, he knew all the "good" fishing spots!

Would love to see the patio garden! If you can, take a picture and post ok?

That's great to hear Tim.

I continue to hope that Deb recovers to full health and that you both enjoy lots of these simple but pleasurable times together.

Blessings on both of you.

Pete.

Glad to hear things are going ok for the both of you. Relaxing and fishing. It just doesn't get any better than that.

Let me clarify a bit: There hasn't been any additional improvement in Deb's state of recovery. We are pretty much were we have been for the last year or so. About 80% recovered. What has changed in, I think, her perspective on things and her attitude toward her changed life. She has grown a bit more accepting of the fact that the life she once had is gone and that the life she has now IS the life she is going to have. Mourning the loss of her former life has given way to LIVING her present life.

Oh...this is a biggie...last week, when Deb and I made a run to a Menonite run plant nursery not far from town, we stopped at a restaurant for lunch on the way home. We have not eaten out in a public place in well over a year. This was a big thing for us...it was a simple $20 meal at a little country restaurant...but it was a ginormous step for Deb...one that made my day.
