General FSX Question

Just curious, is there any advantage to moving default airplanes to a sub folder? Is there a difference in load speed when starting the Sim?

Only advantage I can see is keeping the main folders more organized.

I've added a couple folders for AI Aircraft and MAIW Aircraft and have no problem with ai aircraft generation.

On my install, I limit the non-default aircraft and helos by moving individual aircraft folders to an external drive when not flying. So, when FSXA starts it only loads specific aircraft. My loading speed is a little long the first time I load the sim for the day, but additional loadings are fairly speedy.

Not sure that answers your question or not.

It will definitely speed up the air plane selection menu. I agree with the above too, save your favorite plane as default

I only keep e.g. 8-10 aircraft in the main "live" airplanes folder and frequently swap them in and out of other "hangar folders" on other drives as my shortish attention span wanders to things new and to revisit old favourites. Keeps things simple and loads faster.

A bit of advice; FSX must load its default aircraft and default flight first in order for all of the systems in other aircraft to operate correctly. I suggest leaving the default aircraft and flight unaltered and create separate saved flights for favorite aircraft or your last destination.

Something I remember from years ago is what prompted me to ask the question. Maybe hoping that it was no longer relevant but it seems the best course is to leave well enough alone.

Planes you downloaded you will be fine, he was just saying that the stock aircraft have gauges that are referenced in the panel.cfg file for instruments and stuff.
Panel.cfg

That is, a lot of people that design planes use the stock aircraft for reference. If you need help, one of us will gladly make a do not remove these ones list for you.

Also, Just an FYI....Default aircraft are used in the Missions and if deleted or put elsewhere, will cause the Missions not to work anymore. I speaketh from experience!

The panel cfg line would be
alias= not "allies="
You are correct in that a whole lot of people and developers relied upon default gauges for their add-on aircraft. There seemed to be very few developers who used custom written gauge files.

So wait, is there a way to put all the WOAI and MAIW aircaft into a single subfolder inside of /SimObjects/Airplanes and still have them show-up in game or am i misunderstanding?

No, they were just saying you can put them on a usb-thumbdrive or in a folder on your desktop, "offloading them" from the game file, and simply clicking and dragging the plane back into the simobjects file when you want to use it. A "hanger" if you will. I suppose you could put them in a file adjacent to simobjects titled "hanger" as well.

Okay, from the beginning.

Here is a copy from the [MAIN] section of my FSX.cfg file.

[Main]
User Objects=Airplane, Helicopter
SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes
SimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\Rotorcraft
SimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehicles
SimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\Boats
SimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\Animals
SimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\Misc
SimObjectPaths.6=SimObjects\MAIW Aircraft
SimObjectPaths.7=SimObjects\AI Aircraft

Notice the last two SimObjectPaths, 6 and 7. Naturally, make a copy of your FSX.cfg file before any editing. Then you can create additional folders that are recognized by the sim. As stated previously my two folders contain MAIW and AI aircraft folder which are still read by the sim and keep my primary SimObjects\Airplanes folder a little more organized.

Have fun

Yep, Mine is slightly longer but same basic idea. I like the AI suggestion though:

[Main]
User Objects=Airplane, Helicopter
SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\AI_Airplanes
SimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\Airplanes
SimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\Rotorcraft
SimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\GroundVehicles
SimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\Boats
SimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\Animals
SimObjectPaths.6=SimObjects\Misc
SimObjectPaths.7=SimObjects\Amphibians
SimObjectPaths.8=SimObjects\Bush
SimObjectPaths.9=SimObjects\Civil_Jets
SimObjectPaths.10=SimObjects\Experimental
SimObjectPaths.11=SimObjects\General_Aviation
SimObjectPaths.12=SimObjects\Military
SimObjectPaths.13=SimObjects\Kazunori_Ito
SimObjectPaths.14=SimObjects\Classics
SimObjectPaths.15=SimObjects\WarBirds

Okay, now we got that settled. :D

You asked is there any advantage to moving default airplanes to a sub folder? I doubt there would be any increase in load speed because the sim would still read whatever is in the sub folder. Only advantage I would think would be to make the primary Airplanes folder more manageable.

BTW Falcon, you have a heck of a lot of sub folders. I presume that the sim is loading everything? How long does that take?

Yea, I got a bit crazy. My assumption was/is that unless there are airplanes present in the designated folder there is no effect on load speed. Each of those folders has a "Hangar" folder. If I'm not using any of those planes they all reside in the hangar and the sim wouldn't load them. Many times, despite the number of folders, I may only have 3 or 4 active addon airplanes at any given time.

Understood (y)

I´ve create a folder called aitraffic and insert on [MAIN] at fsx.cfg the folder name

[Main]
User Objects=Airplane, Helicopter
SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes
SimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\Rotorcraft
SimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehicles
SimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\Boats
SimObjectPaths.4=SimObjects\Animals
SimObjectPaths.5=SimObjects\Misc
SimObjectPaths.6=SimObjects\aitraffic
SimObjectPaths.7=C:\Program Files (x86)\12bPilot\SODE\data\SimObjects
SimObjectPaths.8=C:\ProgramData\12bPilot\SODE\SimObjects

And have a airplanes folder more clean and organizated and aitraffic is more easy to edit and other things.

Since SODE call a other folder way, im think you can create like a "C:\WOAI\" and all fine. I do same with scenery, put the scenery on a HD partion called E:\addon scenery, and keep this partion always defragmented.
