German design, US production, RAF markings...

Hello Nigel

Nice bit of work there! (Not sure about the German design, but still...)

I've been writting this because the father of the Mustang is Edgar Schmued, who was born at Hornback, Germany, and immigrated to the United States before the 30's. Whenever I go to the
La Ferté Alais air show the speaker tells us that it is a german engineer who design that a/c.
While seeking informations on the Mustang I finally found his name, he also design the famous jets as the F86 Sabre, and F100 by many others. You will find a liittle biography in french at the following adress section R-S. I'll try to put a translation for the bio and other informations on Schmued in my next uploads.

It's a good thing he went to the US before the war. The Luftwaffe could've really used his designs.

The Luftwaffe had designs as good or better than the Mustang.
It was engine power where they fell short for a crucial period in the later part of the war.

When you bear in mind that a sizeable chunk of the Jagdwaffe was still using the DB605A even in 1945...

Alain, I didn't know that! Good bit of information there.

Glad to learn something to Ndicki, but so few from me and so much from you !

Best regards

The main thing about the Mustang was its fuel capacity. Having said that, with full internal tanks, it was about as manoeuvrable as a house-brick... And it wasn't exactly that manoeuvrable to begin with. Not to mention being rather light on serious fire-power. It's a good thing that the Mustang squadrons never had to fly them against boxes of well-armed heavy bombers, because with only four or six .50 machine-guns.........

But it is an elegant aircraft, and Alain's skins certainly do it justice!

Does the Mustang really have those flight characteristics in real life or just in the sim?

Really truly. If you fill up the fuselage tanks, it loses all its ability to dogfight. Gregoryp did a thorough analysis of this some time ago, but I have no idea what happened to it.

Yes and it was dangerous to fly, several pilots lost their lives befor they understood whant was happening. If I remember well, the rear tanks were first introduced with early D models. When it was full up, pilots used to empty half of it before to swich on drop tanks.
