Gmax problem

Hi All

I'm slowly working my way through designing scenery and have now moved onto Gmax and creating buidlings

However I've hit a snag I just cant fathom

Once I've got my building created I cant get my assigned textures to show in the perspective window :(

Ive followed countless tutorials on how to do it and step by step I always get to the point where you create a UVW map around the building to get the textures to show up but all it does in the perspective window is change colour :isadizzy: rather then show the textures on the faces like it does in all the tutorials

Has anyone in scenery creation come across this problem??

Im using Gmax 1.2, PaintshopPro X, saving the textures in bmp format and running on Win7 64bit OS

Thanks :salute:

Hi Matt, it sounds like you are missing a step somewhere or you haven't fully comprehended the processes involved. Your description also seems rather strange in places.

Ive followed countless tutorials on how to do it and step by step I always get to the point where you create a UVW map around the building to get the textures to show up but all it does in the perspective window is change colour :isadizzy: rather then show the textures on the faces like it does in all the tutorials

You don't create a UVW map around the buildings but map the polygons of the building itself and apply the textures to that. It sounds like you are describing the method of setting up a '3-view' so that you can build the model in the first place.

However this bit....

all it does in the perspective window is change colour

...seems to imply that you have indeed mapped the building polys which is why they changed from the base colour of the model to possibly a grey colour. This makes me think that you have not applied a 'material' to the model (or done it incorrectly). You need to apply a material so that GMAX knows what texture sheet(s) to apply to which parts of the model.

When you get to the material set-up make sure you check the box which says 'No base material specular' near to the bottom of the material dialogue box otherwise the model will be super shiny when you finally get it in the sim.

Strangely I did a PC reset while I walked away for a breather, came back to it, followed the tutorial and THIS time the textures appeared perfectly :isadizzy:

Sometimes I really hate PC's :)

Thanks for the tips though Larry, and I can get will help my learning curve :running:

Thanks :salute:

Don't worry Matt all scenery modellers have been where you are when they first started out, it is very confusing at first but each model gets easier to make.

By the time I had finished the 200+ custom buildings in my FSX Hobbs airport project I could literally knock one out in less than 30 minutes from start to finish including doing all the texturing. :icon_lol:

Just an add-on question about texturing

Is it best to use 1 sheet for all textures ie have front, back, and side texture all in a 512x512 bmp or to use individual texture bmp's for front, back and side?

Thanks :salute:
Matt

One sheet is better by far. For Hobbs I used four texture sheets for the buildings, the two large hangars had a sheet each but all the camp buildings were squeezed onto the other two sheets. All sheets were 1024 x 1024. I have attached the two main sheets so that you can see how I did it.

Sorry for the questions Larry but hopefully this is the last one

I've got to the point where I can comfortably create scenery, export and use it with Instant Scenery however my 1 question left that I cant find on Google anywhere is

Once I've created Unwrap UVW's to crop and place the texture correctly on a face, once I've collapsed all in the modifyer's menu If I change my mind can I un-assign or change the texture on a face?

Attempted trial and error to see if I could stumble onto a solution but just cant get that lucky

Thanks
Matt

No problem Matt, people helped me a great deal when I started out (and still do as I am currently modelling my first flyable aircraft) and I see it as a way of paying back my dues for help received. :icon_lol:

Yes, you can just add another (new) Unwrap UVW modifier which will show you your current mapping and then you can edit as required. If it's just something on the texture that needs changing then simply edit the texture file. If you want to use a different texture sheet you will have to change the material settings to call the new texture or create a new material if need be.

Thank you, that was just what I needed

Its always so simple a solution that I never try it :isadizzy:

Thank you again :salute:
Matt

Thanks Dave :jump:

Been trying to create a realistic-ish looking hedge but no joy, always get errors trying to convert it once its exported lol

Thanks :salute:
