Gmax to FSDS 'early version' Compiler question

Hey guys,

In a early moment of reflection upon the problem of compiling FS9 models with denser mesh, it occurred to me. The early FSDS design program had its own, innovative and powerful (and fast) compiler.

And with that, it came to mind, perhaps.. a Gmax mesh could be run through that compiler, somehow converted to a format that FSDS runs, and perhaps it will be able to achieve such a 'high quality' ultra dense mesh, without issues...

I have never heard anyone talk of FSDS mesh 'auto-welding' the Vertices together when under 4MM distance to each other. I have never heard of a model not compiling because it was too big.

Any idea's on this?

It can be done I believe, but you lose all textures and animations, so it probably isn't worth it. You first convert/save as Autocad format and then use CVA convertor to take it into FSDS, you loose alot as I mentioned before.

The only other method I have heard of is Archisoft mdl to fsds source, which doesn't serve your purpose as it requires a compiled mdl file. He only does this on request and with permissions from authors granted. If he can get mdl's to fsds, maybe he can help with Gmax?

Other than that, and I imagine you already checked, the designer sights might help.

Hi Bill
Fsds2.4 had its own compiler but with this you get no fs9 native support.
It really was only for fs2.2k and cfs2,It had polly and mdl file size limits and no xml support.Fsds3 and above use the default msoft compilers,so whatever problems you have with g-max your going to have with any other 3d app as they all need to use makemdl to get to a fs9 mdl.

Bill,

if you could help me to find the .3ds/.gmax file format, I would like to create a 3ds/gmax to fsdc converter...

Thanks Wozza,

Rats.. I didnt know the compiler for FSDS had limitations. Good to know.

Well, it was an idea.

Hello Archisoft,

What do you need exactly.

The system that creates the MDL from Gmax or Max formats (.gmax and .3ds) goes through several transitions which wind to .X format and then to MDL format.

Also, if you mean FSX format files to FSDS, that might be difficult with materials, unless they could be stripped off or 'neutralized' (pehaps hidden via a brackets system or something, then reactivated when brought back to max/gmax by taking the brackets back out, thus keeping the materials intact when being edited in FSDS format).

I should have learned a bit of programming.. arrghh.. :banghead:

If only there was a way to open up MakeMDL, find those adjustments settings, and take away the 'limitations', turn off autoweld or reduce the distance to some super low setting, and have the polygons at 'unlimited number' setting (or close to that ;) ). We could then have FSX quality models in FS9, and FS9 models could be compiled straight to FSX without 'adjustments to mesh'.

Bill,

.3ds/.gmax-->.x-->.fsc is a good idea...:mixedsmi:

FSDS 2.24 have not the mdl file limited...
mdl file incliding(3d graphic data, textures, materials, animations...)
no size limited.
FSDS2 and makeMDL have the same limited --> any model (main/ vc/ lod) model after compiling limited in 65535 vertexes.

if MS$ could release FSX file format SDK, I will create a FSC to FSX compiler.:wiggle:
