• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

50 years since first US orbit. First American to orbit the Earth, aboard Friendship 7 on Feb. 20, 1962. Oldest person to fly in space, at age 77 aboard shuttle Discovery in 1998. U.S. senator for four terms and one-time presidential candidate. Namesake of a NASA center as well as a university's school of public affairs.

Now 90 and living in Columbus, Ohio, Glenn just recently gave up flying and sold his twin-engine Beechcraft Baron. It was tough hopping up on a wing to climb aboard the plane. Glenn and his wife, Annie, who turns 92 on Friday, both had knee replacements last year.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — The name still resonates and generates goose bumps like few others in the world of spaceflight. .

.The RIGHT STUFF of YESTERYEAR!...when comes another???....not in my life time I fear..or for my kids at this rate..... ...NASA!....in mothballs!!...

He's a true hero.
"Hero" is a much-abused word, I fear.
But Glenn qualifies, all right.
I do admire Alan Shepard, too, going boldly where no man (OK, one other) had gone before.
I agree: Theirs was a golden era of THE RIGHT STUFF.
