Gotta love the Aussies and their beer....

Back in 1993, I was with VQ-1 on NAS Agana, Guam, before BRAC closed that base.

An Australian P-3 squadron was onboard the base for an exercise with my squadron. A truly fun bunch of guys to be around. They brought their own beer on a pallet with them. One brand I remember vividly was Victoria Bitters (or VB). Great stuff.

Anyway, someone sent me this video tonight, and it reminded me of that time.

Enjoy.

I drank a lot of Victoria Bitters on an assignment to Vanuatu (New Hebrides Islands).

I think I drank every Australian beer available when I was on R and R there. They all beat the 'ell out Ba Mi Ba, the local beer in VN.

Everyone that does drink over this way would be getting there guts full of it at this time. The heat is really ON lately. The south and south eastern areas are pushing way over 40C...nightime about 30C !!!!
Hot and extremely humid in northern areas.
Gotta keep your fluids up.

'Victoria Bitter' please gentlemen!
:friday:
demorier, just gone 00.10 and it's around 35C right now, dropped about 10C a couple of hours ago!
Only a couple of frosty 'Redbacks' for me, but they were nectar.
Another 40C+ for Thursday and then we go down (?????) to the chilly 'low 30s'.
:kilroy:

I forgot to mention something else in my first post. The Aussies were pranksters, and were constantly joking around with each other. Although the temps on Guam are consistently close to 100 degrees, we had to wear coveralls with sleeves rolled down, etc... on the flight line. Not the Aussies. They could wear shorts, and short-sleeved shirts! And it was common to see them playing football on the flight line! Plus they wore walkmans, listening to their tunes!

Hmmm I reckon VB is one drink that tastes terriffic when at BBQ's & only then when you don't have to pay for it...
It's a bloody terrible taste when you have to pay for it!

Personally i prefer a Crown Lager or Cascade (Heavy or Light) or a Boaggs :)

Being a northerner some southern life style customs seem a little strange at times. But lately I really feel sorry for our southern cousins, first over Perth way and then Victoria and South Australia states are copping a real hammering with heat waves. Up this way we just sweat a lot.

I hope some of that heat lingers on for my upcoming visit
to Sydney and Surfers Paradise in May.

Here in the San Francisco area we are experiencing alot of
unseasonably warm weather ( 60's and low 70's F ) for
this time of year.

Make mine a VB any day.... :friday:

I always used to hate VB, but then got stuck on it after a few camping trips with mates - it was all they would ever (and still) drink.

While in PNG in 2005, I asked for a couple of VB 'tinnies' at one of the pubs in Port Moresby ... 20 Kina it cost me ... not converting this to Aussie dollars, I was in shock - "$20 for two cans of VB???" - before the penny dropped.

This ad was quite good back when it was on, though have seen quite a few good international beer ads... Like the Guinness one saying share with a mate, or two ;) .... or the Heineken one where the woman shows her friends a wardrobe of shoes, while the guy shows his mates a large fridge of beer.

Speaking of the weather, currently in Canberra (7:40 AM) it's about 21*C, meaning it will get back up to the late 30s or early 40s by the afternoon ... with the regular hot, dry wind. It's supposed to storm most of this week (starting this afternoon) which will hopefully drop the temp to something more bearable. Hopefully next weekend will be good for my fishing trip to Jindabyne :jump:

You were game to go to a pub in Moresby Sturm....what courage, you must have been very thirsty. Those South Australian will need to be a hardy lot....more of the same heatwave continueing well into next week. We need to send them as much VB and anything else we can get our hands on.

'Vic' was always good trading currency, I swapped a slab (well .... two dozen tinnies as we never received 'slabs' at the Dat!) to a thirsty Jarhead for an M14!

When I did that exchange tour with the Belgian Navy, we always kept Stella Artois on hand just to trade. We kept the better beers for ourselves :d.

um this is a thread im afraid i will have to confiscate
all alcohol as im not sure how old you are

When I was doing the 'Deid years ago, the Australians didn't fly the day of (I think) the world cup finals. They all dressed up in funny costumes up at the Wagon Wheel (bar) and (I presume) got piss drunk. They made so much noise, we heard them clean across base. A good time was had, but not necessarily remembered by all.
