Graphics Screen Resolution Problem

Even though I thought to be quite clued up with IT solutions, I have a problem with FS9 somebody might be able to assist me on...

I used to run fs9 on XP with no problems at a screen resolution of 1280 x 1024 x 32.
Now I get a crash to desktop, or no response at all, and need to go to the hatred ctrl+alt+del option (or restart my system) just to get rid of fs9. It's stuck on a black screen!
Strange enough it works perfectly fine in a lower resolution (1024x768), but that's just not the quality I had before.
This occured out of the blue, with no uploads.
I de-& reinstalled the graphics card (Nvidia 8400GS), no problems apart from fs9! The latest drivers. (Rolled back and forward).
What is going on? Any clues?

Dust?

Make sure you don't have a build up of dust on the heatsinks, high temps are a killer, the higher res will bump the temps up. It could be the warmer weather too, if no dust, try running with the cover off just to rule it out.

I've got to go along with Jamie about heat being a likely cause.

My system started acting much the same way, turned out the fan on my vid card had died.

Cheers mates!
That really sound plausible, and could be a good reason!
Maybe my cigarette ash is being sucked in...
I'll have a clean up & see what happens, let you know!
Thanks for your advice, I didn't think that would be possible.
Kind regards,
Stuart

To help you look at the system:

I found a little app called Piriform Speccy that answers all the questions I have about my PC, in a format that doesn't require an intimate knowledge of machine language.

Among other things, it tells you all the onboard temperatures.
If a fan has died, or the grot has built up, that's where it will show.

Thanks for the Speccy link, the interface looks really nice. I've been using Everest in the past but perhaps it's time for a change...

Say, have you ever tried Piriform's Defraggler? What was your impression?

Thanks :icon29:

Thanks for the HU Wing_Z!
A nice little application. Even though it doesn't do anything, it gives you a great insight of what's going on in the box! Great!

No problem, I hope it helps with your issues.
I like it especially for the reason that it doesn't "do" stuff!
I have a particularly nasty tale about a "Registry Cleaner"...

Not yet, but now you mention it, I suppose it's time to clean up those drives a bit!

Unfortunately not!
All is clean in the box, running the graphics at an acceptable 51 degrees.
My standard settings are on 1024 x 768, but fs is on a higher resolution.
It used to 'click' and switch the resolution, but now the computer just crashes.
Weird!
In the meantime I will put up with less quality graphics.

Umm; if it helps at all; my graphics went haywire after a windows update;
lots of peeps suffering same at moment ; from posts in various forums
this may be down to Windows doing away with direct sound and the direct x
interface with pre-vista games getting stuck in a memory loop and causing a buffer overflow.

I got stuck with it for some 3 months past; got a new HD; Win 7; new 1Gb ATI graphics card; all nil fix until a windows update last week and everything seems back to normal. Very (not the exact word I would 've used!) frustrating .
