Greatest Engine of all time.

Yeah, it's tough to beat Chrysler's 426 Hemi, it's a legend and rightly so. Being a Ford man, I can say the 427 SOHC produced some serious power, even though it was a bit complex. The Boss 429 was another great effort by the blue oval. For a lot of racing applications and street performance, it's hard to beat the 351 Cleveland. Let's face it, FORD really means First On Race Day.

Maybe for NASCAR Ed, but I think the 16-cylinder W-block engine that produces 1,001 bhp in the Bugatti Veyron has to be the greatest piece opf engine engineering ever found in a car.

Now as to racing engine sound, I've heard plenty Hemis in my time, but there is simply nothing in racing that has ever sounded sweeter than 12-cylinder Matra engine.

Plenty of engines that could be described as the best engine; the Ferrari 3 liter V-12 (250GT, GTO, LM etc.) comes to mind, maybe the Bentley 4.5 liter blower engine or the Bugatti straight eight.

The 426 gets my vote as it made such huge changes in NASCAR and NHRA in 1964. Like Petty said, I couldn't win on a super speedway until the new HEMI came out, then we won a lot until they banned it. It is still the basic design for the NHRA fuel catagories under several manufacturers.

Never heard of the Cosworth DFV have we????

Perhaps the title should read "Greatest American Engine of all time", but compared to the work of Harry Amadeus Miller the Hemi pales in comparison.
