I thought I would see how the Aeroplane Heaven FS2002/2004 Grumman F3F-2 Flying Barrel flies!

Grumman G22 Gulfhawk

Wish I had gotten that one back when it was available. Kazunori Ito made one that was really nice but no VC of course and it just never made the leap forward unfortunately. That one looks like a nice model. Thanks for posting.

Does anyone know if this model is still available? I've searched high and low but haven't had any luck finding it. :frown-new:

Aeroplane Heaven is back and I have a feeling the AH F3F-2 will return as an all new FSX/P3D model.

:wavey: money in hand...been wanting one of these for a while.
I sent an e-mail to them asking if the F3F was still available anywhere. . .basically it is not and they did say it is on the list to be brought up to current standards. . .however it is also way down on that list so it is a long way off.

Tufun did you notice that the textures become transparent once it starts getting darker? During the day the aircraft looks fine but as soon as the sun starts to go down, the aircraft goes transparent. Not a big deal if you don't intend to fly during that period of course. This includes all exterior textures that have an alpha, struts, braces, wings, fuselage, cowling and so on. This is in V2.5 by the way.

The only indication I see with transparency is with the cables. Any particular time day/night?

Yea, I noticed that wire problem today while flying it. That's weird though about the transparent textures. All my planes display that same effect and it progressively get's more obvious the darker it gets. I eliminated the alpha areas of one aircraft fuselage and that fixed the problem. I am not however, going to mess with it. I don't fly much at night and I'm sure not going to go through 8 or 9 liveries changing alpha channels on every external texture, lol.

I wondering if my ATI card is not effected as with Nvidia cards. Only the cables are effected and that's minor compared to FSX with the transparency box. With very light props and raise the seat up to the Telescopic sight helps.

Tinkering with the paint kit... a little on the dark side, but its like those cars with the flat black paint jobs. This plane would rock with a 2048 res or higher! :adoration:

Yea, that looks much better. I thought about doing a 4096x4096 paint kit and just redoing a few that I really liked myself. Nice work Tufun!!

It doesn't look bad even at 1024, but will do 2048 dds files and update and compose some better rivets/lines later. I'm bogged down with two other projects.

Tufun,

I'm a little slow to reach this thread..there seems to be a few of them between here and the FSX thread...

What must I do to:

1) Install this into P3Dv2.5 and have it work? (it's a FS2002 installer?)
2) Your drab paint there at the end...beautiful...

Steps to extract the aircraft.

Run the AH Grumman F3F installer and when you get to Destination Location, click on Browse button.

This can be done in a few different ways, you can choice any drive, but this example selects the root C:\ drive and in the box just type in AH Grumman F3F.
This will create a folder C:\AH Grumman F3F then click OK.

Check to see if the destination is correct then click Next.

Navigate to the C:\ drive and look for the AH Grumman F3F folder. There should be two folders: Aircraft and Effects. Copy the AH_GrummanF3F folder into the Prepar3Dv2\SimObjects\Airplanes folder. I don't use the Effects folder files since its FS2002 files. With the gauges just copy them to the Prepar3D v2\gauge folder.

The Grumman F3F-2, "Flying Barrel" video

The Grumman F3F-2, "Flying Barrel", at the Air Museum Planes of Fame 2008 airshow. According to Steve Hinton, President of Planes of Fame, these are restored aircraft, not reproductions. There are only 4 flying examples of the Flying Barrel left today. The four surviving aircraft, three -2 models and the G-32A, were restored by Herb Tischler's Texas Airplane Factory in Fort Worth. The work took four years and consisted of rebuilding the G-32A and utilizing the parts of three aircraft which had originally crashed in Hawaii, to complete the other examples. The F3F-2 is featured in the 1940 movie, "Flight Command", with Robert Taylor. The movie is a story about the "Hellcats" of the US Navy. There is some of the best aerial footage of large formations of F3F's in this movie.

Tufun,

Maybe this will help to come up with a sound similar to the video. :encouragement:

IMHO it has a similar sound to the T-28 engine with the Chuga Chuga sounds when it is taxing.
After hearing the real deal, this gets me to thinking/searching for another similar sound.

Stuff just look a whole lot better in P3Dv2.5. I'm guessing DX11 or HDR just does it.

I was checking the lines in the sim and grabbed this pic... not bad for FS2002 model. Just getting started! :adoration:
