Guadalcanal Journal

lifejogger

Lost in Texas
I came across this web site while I was searching for something else. This is a very interesting journal written by James A. Donahue while he was on Guadalcanal with the 1st Marine Division. It is an amazing account of what he went through from August 7. 1942 until the Division left in December 1942. Well worth reading the whole Journal.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" /><o:p></o:p>

Funny you should mention that book. After reading lifejogger's post, I opened up the cedar chest/book trunk and dug out my copy of the Guadalcanal Diary. My copy, which I got at a yard sale for a quarter, has some water damage...but it is intact and readable...is from the original printing...first edition. Published in 1943, this book is a very good look at the life of a Marine on Guadalcanal at the time.

OBIO,

I have the same edition, but I paid about $10 plus postage through Alibris. I read it in high school and 40 years later decided I wanted to read it again, so I bought it. You have excellent taste in books. :salute:

You'll hate me then,

I have a 1943 Random House 1st Ed in near perfect condition with the sleeve.

It was in the junk bin at the library. Paid 50 cents for it.

Sorry......

No hate.....a great find is a great find. I love my water damaged copy....It looks like it was ON Guadalcanal with the writer...makes it more visceral and raw.

Gents,
Not meaning to hi-jack this post,...however,...I'd like to mention another book written by a Marine during his fighting on Peleliu and Okinawa. It's called "With the Old Breed" written by E.B. Sledge. It's a real eye opener,...if you haven't read it yet, by all means do.
You won't forget it,...that I promise.

I'm reading "The Pacific" at the moment, and E. B. Sledge is one of the featured marines in the book.

I have read :with the Old Breed" and it was very good. Another good book is called "Goodby Darkness" by Willima Manchester. In it he tells his story of serving in the Marines in WWII. He also was also at Pelelie and Okinawa.

And if you can catch "HELL IN THE PACIFIC" on The Military Channel, you'll get to see and hear E. B. "Sledgehammer" Sledge tell it in his own words. It's a good documentary with good commentary by those that lived and breathed it.

I read "With the Old Bread" more years ago than I want to remember. I'll read it again someday. Seems like it as published as one of the "Bantam" series of war books in the 60s and 70s.

I'm currently reading "The Pacific War," a recent release written by a former WWII Marine named William B. Hopkins. It is focused more on the grand stratagy and macro view of the PTO, which is a good overview and background to the micro views in the afore mentioned books.
