Gun sounds

hurricane3

SOH-CM-2023
Over the years I've always had trouble getting the gun sounds to work in planes that have them.
I have gotten some to work by putting the gun sound wave file contents in both the sound and effects file, but it doesn't always work.
An example is the new Macchi 205 by Italo D'Attomo ,I put the wave file(50 cal.) into the FS9 sound file but when I press the brake button or even push the brakes with my CH pedals ,while airborn, gear up,which is supposed to activate the gun sound ,I get nothing, the sam with many other planes that have gun sounds, another is the Fairy Barrcuda, some planes I've gotton them to work(Alphas SE5A) but most don't work.
What I'am I doing wrong? Thanks

Hard to tell how the maker set up the files unless you open the files up to inspect them to try to determine which keyboard key triggers the effect.

A lot of times effects are linked to the "I" key I have noticed. Give that a try Hurricane3!

nope

Thanks for the reply, but nope in this case (the MC 205 )the gun sounds are activated buy the brake key or what ever you have assigned to it after your airborn.
You right about some planes useing the "I" key ,some use the "O" key and some use the "L" key but no matter which key ,I rarely can get them to work.
I can open the sound file and sure enough the "50 cal." wave sound is there but still no gun sound. Thanks for trying, looks like I might have stumped every on this ,cause you the only reply I've gotten so far. Thanks again

Hello all-
The gun sounds for the MC205 worked fine for me... I'll risk asking a dumb question: I trust you have that .dll file in your FS9 folder? Remember- you also have to be airborne for it to work...
I was hoping that there would have been at least a muzzle flash effect linked to the gun sound, like the setup Stuart Green had on a few of his WWI aircraft- I adapted that to a bunch of WWI planes with no problem. IIRC someone put a cannon effect package together for a Spitfire somewhere along the line- perhaps I'll take a shot at fitting that in...

not a dumb question

No thats not a dumb question at all when it comes to me ,but yes I put the dll file in the fs9 folder even though it was already there from many other planes that had to have it,I just let it overwrite.I know the plane has to be airborne ,I'am doing something wrong but it's so simple how can even me screw it up? Thanks for trying

Rob " The Guru" Barendregt put together an effects package for the Realair Spitfire XIV, a search over at Flightsim should find it easily enough.

This is strange

If someone can explain this ,I'd love to know the answer.I checked out the Realair Spit sounds and decided that is was way to involved for me just to get gun sounds.
So while flying the MC205 ,on a whim ,I pressed both Ctrl and the brake keys at the same time and guess what ? Thats right the guns worked,I had cannon fire.If I held down both then let go the guns continue to fire, if I hit both the keys again the fireing stopped. By hitting both keys on and off I could shoot in bursts.
No mention in the read me was said about holding down Ctrl AND brake ,I gotta try this on some other planes that I can't get the guns to work on.
So lookout for an old guy flying an MC 205 making straffing runs.

This problem seems to stem from the keyboard assignments section. Try moving your FS9.CFG file to a temp directory which will force FS9 to build a new one which will have default assignments. If that doesn't fix it you can put the original back.

Thanks for trying

Thanks Terry , gave it a good shot ,but didn't work. Tried moveing the FS9 config from application data ,ran fs9 and still have to to hit Ctrl then the brake key for the guns to shoot,so I put the old config file back.Kinda a pest to have to hit two keys for the guns to work but at least I have gun sounds.

I don't know a whole lot about how designers make an effects file, but doesn't the designer assign the key in the effect configuration when they make the effect?

If so it would be nice to know where to go to make the change to change it.

As I look in several gun type effects cfg files I see some have a "Type 19". Don't know if that is the key assigner or not. Would be nice if someone who knows how to set up the key assignment could come into the thread to explain how they assign a certain key for the effect they made. Several times I have wondered how it's done myself.

Hurricane3 back in January 2010 I had assembled a cannon effect for use on any A-10 Warthog model. That was when I had my previous computer which had Windows Me. To fire the cannon you would hit the "I" key and it would fire as long as you held that key down. The wave file was put into the FS9\Sound folder. It wave file would also play just as long as you held the "I" key down.

I recently got a new computer and just yesterday I got around to retrieving the Warthog plane files and also went to install the cannon files into the FS9 game in my new computer which has Windows 7 operating platform. Behold, the cannon visually fires but I can't get any sound from the wave file. Everything is installed just as it was on my old computer.

I wonder if this problem is somehow due to this new operating platform.

I looked into the effect's cfg file and the and it has an entry that says Sound=6 I have no idea what 6 means. More to the point, it would be nice if someone who knows the pathway of how and what initiates or triggers a particular sound wave that is placed in FS9\Sound. Out of the Effect cfg file I cannot determine what, Sound=6 means. Somewhere, somehow, there has to be a pathway to trigger the sound wave.

What we need is someone that knows can explain that pathway for the triggering. There was a sound dll that went with the warthog effect. I wonder if maybe that specific dll is not compatible with a later operating system. Just a wonder of coarse.

Hi,

Being a designer of many addon packages for gun sounds & effect control gauges, maybe I can shed some light on this subject. Hope it's not getting too technical.

First of all, FS9 has no awareness of guns (sounds and/or visual effect).
So everything that's added is via an addon "trick".

The visual effect is just an effect (.fx file) you add to an aircraft, how you control that effect (on/off) depends on how you add the .fx file to the aircraft.cfg file (as a Smoke effect or Light effect). Now, usually a gauge is added that controls the used Smoke or Light switch indirectly (via another FS command, like Brakes). Because disadvantage of using a specific Lightswitch directly, is that using the "L" key (All lights toggle) will also enable the effect. And using a specific SMoke or Lightswitch function also depends if that function is allready in use for a particular aircraft addon (for it's real purpose).
Hence, the addon gauge control has to correspond with the used function in the SMoke/Light section in the aircraft.cfg for it to work.

As far as the gun sound is concerned:
Usually done in one of two ways:
1. Add a sound directive (Sound= ..) to the .fx file itself.
With the disadvantage that the sound file is always played fully (so if you release the "trigger" the sound keeps on playing untill finished), and you must have fixed-filename .wav files in the \Sound folder; with the name depending on the number used in SOund= ..
2. The better way is to use an addon gauge that controls playing .wav files depending on a certain criterium for trigger; which allows the gun sound to be repetitive, and to immediately stop if you release the gun "trigger".

In short: there is no good, generic solution that works for all aircraft without it being adapted to the specific configuration of that aircraft.

Hope this makes sence ? :)

Rob

a lot of whys

There are a lot of why does putting the wave file in the sound file work for some planes and not for others? Why on some planes when your only supposed to put the wave file in the sound folder it doesn't work until you put it in the FX folder also, and finally ,why on the mc 205 do I have to press both Ctrl and the brake key to make the guns work?Maybe this will work on some of the other planes where the gun sounds don't work ,like the Firefly which is supposed to have gun sound when you press the I or o key don't remember now,all I know is the sound wave file is in the sound folder but no sounds when you press button thats supposed to trigger the guns .
