Hard Target (wip)

Working on another of my wild hairs, lol.

Since it's starting to take shape, thought I'd mention it. Some of the bits and pieces included in CFS3 can almost make a guy sick. That includes the so-called subpens, which were always near the top of the list as bombing targets.

So anyway, I'm working up Keroman/Lorient, the complex of U-boat bunkers (6 in all), which is to this day one of the largest sub bases around. Also working the main surrounding port area it was all located at, which all still stands today. So yeah...a hard target!

Just Keroman III is twice the size of the stock 'subpen'.

Rafael was kind enough to loan me one of his source files, which will give the flak guns that were located on the roof of Keroman III and Keroman I, besides all the others that will be tossed into the mix. (In reality, Keroman was defended by over 800 flak guns of various sizes!)

The place was also bombed or attacked by the allies about 300 times.

There will be plenty of structures, etc. to hit, but the bunkers will be on their own terms.

Now had Captain Disney RN be able to develop this earlier:

http://video.aol.com/video-detail/disney-rocket-bomb/1719244819

it might have just needed a couple of well aimed ordnance to undo all of your hard work.

It was a 4500lb bomb carried on a pylon one under each wing of a B17 for use against hardened pens and bunkers. A rocket motor cut in at 5000 feet to drive the bomb through upto 20 feet of reinforced concrete reaching speeds of 2400 feet per second.

The 92nd BG at Podington were first to use it on 10 February 1945 against the E boat pens at Ijmuiden scoring a direct hit at the north end of the pens.

I like the sound of that!! Gotta WIP screenie?

Well, I see the "Old Rebel" is alive and kickin'!! Still working on the scenery I see! Guess I'll have send William T. and the boys down south to find out what's goin' on with the aircraft models, lol It ain't gonna be pretty when they get there!:Banane35:

Lol! I know it. Too many damn irons in the fire.

When I see some of this stuff in CFS3, I get irritated, and start re-doing.

Just wanted to fly a simple bomb run, and got side-tracked on the lousy set-up for Lorient...just like all the others in the sim.
MS couldn't even locate it right. Keroman is at the next inland point, from the stock location.

Here's a few peeks at the works. (Not even finished with the texture on KIII) The 'blocks' you see on the roofs...are flak positions. All still a little rough, but it looks much better sitting together.

Heard of the Tallboy and Grand Slam? Barnes Wallis developed them to dig deep before going off and IIRC 617 Sqdn dropped Tallboys (ca 7 tons - more than 15,000lb, with specially hardened casings) on shipping pens with 40ft thick concrete roofs. The bombs dug in before going off and the devastation inside had to be seen to be believed.

The Germans believed the bombs had to be rocket-propelled to achieve such results, but they were merely dropped from rather high up by Lancasters and gravity did the rest. Perhaps the Germans were thinking of the Disney as an explanation.

The Grand Slam was a mere 22,000 lb in comparison - Nacht, I'm really looking forward to your new Lancasters!

Doggoneit!

Tryin' to make you boys new targets to toss bombs at...and all ya wanna do is poke holes in 'em! :kilroy:

Hope to make it look a little more like it should. Lol, something to do.

Hey Ted! if you want something to do, what about these? (see pic) LOL :violent: :d

BTW, nice targets!!:wavey:

:173go1: Yeah, I know, John.
Guess I need to put down the Jack Daniels, and spend even more time in gmax.
